About Unleashing Shakespeare
We formed in July 2017 for the purpose of serving the homeschool community in Miami with an outlet for learning the art and joy of performing Shakespeare. We produce one show per year, offered via several ticketed public performances, usually in May. Our show is performed by mostly students but adults are welcome to act also. Non-homeschoolers are welcome to join us as well, but may find that our rehearsal times conflict with their traditional school schedules.
While we are not a co-op in formal business structure, we are a co-op in spirit, depending heavily on actor and family participation in most of the work behind the scenes. Member families (those who have actors in our show) must donate at least 2 hours per month on average to help us operate and produce the show. This allows us to keep our tuition costs very affordable. Multiple actor discounts and work-scholarships also help keep tuition affordable for families.
Our plays use original Shakespeare scripts, but are updated for contemporary audiences. Shakespeare "purists" will recognize famous original monologues in the perfomances, while new dialogue sprinkled throughout the script will add humor and understanding for audiences unfamiliar with the history and/or context of the original play. Our shows are not watered down but rather enhanced for clarity via appropriate script changes, visually rich scenery and costuming, acting choices, and some supplemental explanations distributed before each performance.
