HEY is a support group for home educating parents and their children. The purpose of our group is as follows:
1. To provide support and information (including legal) for parents who are educating their children at home.
2. To provide our children with an opportunity to meet and learn with home-schooled children.
3. To provide a place for people interested in home schooling to come for information.
A Parents Meeting is scheduled once a month, during the school year. The location this year is the Virginia Bible Chapel. The address is 702 5th Ave W in Virginia. (this is next to the Mesabi Daily News) We discuss a given topic, share ideas, show materials, and discuss any difficulties we may be having. The following dates are when we meet in 2010: February 11, March 11, and May 13. The meetings will be held at 6:30 PM, unless otherwise stated.
Each month a volunteer plans a field trip. For example, we have explored the constellations at the Paulucci Planetarium. By experiencing "living history" at the Forest History Center in Grand Rapids we have learned of life in the logging camps. We have visited local businesses to see how they are run.
We have a media library of resource materials for parents and students. This library has audio CDs and videos.
In 1990 we held our first high school graduation ceremony with five graduates. Our 2001 Ceremony had 16 graduates!
To keep our members informed, we post monthly newsletters and calendars. Members can keep themselves updated by choosing to receive weekly or daily e-mails.
For those who are interested in legislative issues concerning home-schooling, we keep in touch with the state organization MACHE and the national organization HSLDA.
Annual membership fees are due in September.
