Learn more about FRLC

Free Range Learning Co-op was created out of a need for a quality secular homeschool co-op in the Jacksonville area that is open and accepting to all.  We do not discriminate based on race, religion (or lack of,) gender, sexual orientation, educational philosophy, political views, etc.  We ask that political opinions and religious beliefs be kept personal and private to your family.  We also ask that you are open and accepting of others whose ideas and beliefs may be different than your own.

We meet most Tuesdays on the westside of Jacksonville. Our year is divided into two semesters: fall and spring, each consisting of 10-12 weeks of classes and additional Tuesdays are filled with optional field trips and parties usually on the first Tuesday of the month.  Some classes run for a year, and others run a single semester.  Our day begins member check-in at 9:45. Our first class session begins at 10:00 and our last class ends at 3:00.  There are four class sessions within this time. We have lunch in the middle of the day after session 2 from 12:00-1:00.  Many families bring their lunches, as it is necessary to drive to restaurants.  There are limited spots for families that are not able to attend the entire day.

Our annual family community fee is $160 and includes membership for your family from July through June.  This fee is NON-REFUNDABLE regardless of how many semesters you choose to participate in nor is it prorated if you do not attend all semesters.  All families are required to volunteer in three (3) positions.  Volunteer positions include teacher, co-teacher, assistant, nursery worker, committee member, coordinator, and any other way your family can make a voluntary contribution to the co-op.  We are a community where everyone pitches in for the betterment of the community and our children. Our fees are kept minimal and cover facility rental, website, liability insurance, and necessary operating expenses.  Without each family contributing this would not be possible.  All classes have a $6 class fee, and some classes have additional material fees or require the purchase of materials.

We welcome all educational philosophies.  Some of our classes are structured, with homework due, and others are not as structured.  Nursery volunteers are available to care for infants while parents fulfill volunteer obligations and parents are always welcome to take their younger child into the nursery for play or rest.

2012 was our first year, and we have had incredible success with all our classes, volunteers, and families.  If you wish to join our community, please request membership, and someone from the membership team will contact you to answer any questions you may have.

Compared to some other co-ops we may seem to have a relaxed or laid-back attitude. We do not feel the need for rigorous institutionalized learning, although we do offer some traditionally structured classes.  Age ranges or grade levels are approximate and left up to the parent.  It is the parents’ responsibility to make sure their child is a good fit for the class.  Children learn at different rates, so we do not attempt to put all of them in the same box.  We do ask that you are respectful of the other children in the class when placing a child outside of the suggested age as maturity levels are just as important as a child’s knowledge and physical levels.

Thank you for your interest in our learning community.
