September 2017 -  Homeschool Dads! - Thank you, Dads and Moms, for joining us tonight to hear Randy Kopp, veteran homeschool Dad & facilitator. Randy shared his testimony of faith in Jesus Christ & then discussed husbands' attitudes toward God, their wife, their children and their work. As a proponent of our children being salt & light in the public school system, why & how would he make the switch to homeschooling? Colin V. did tonight's "Day in the Life Of" segment. Announcements were shared about upcoming field trips.
August 2017 -  Welcome Back! After lots of announcements and welcoming words, Thérèse McDonald spoke to us on the topic of Homeschool Burnout. Have you struggled with a sense of lack of success at homeschooling? Suffering? Chaos? Thérèse has a gentle way of speaking truth while extending great hope with practical tips for self-car and freedom in your homeschools. Sketch notes from tonight's talk will be posted in the Notes tab on our home page. June 2017 -  Annual HSCF Track & Field Day at the Strathcona Athletic Field. Thank you to the Hassans for organizing this delightful day, and to all the volunteers. It's a huge event that we appreciate so much! The weather turned out to be a gift, right! May 2017 - AGM & Grad Panel. Our group enjoys Godly unity & willing volunteers stepping up to share the workload. Thank you for a smooth AGM & to Tracy who served two terms as President. For the rest of the evening, a panel of four homeschool graduates discussed their experience & benefits of homeschooling through high school, working and/or attending post secondary. Thank you to Sonya for moderating the panel discussion. 
April 2017 - Annual Science & Heritage Fair showcasing aound 40 student projects. What a great night of exploring God's wonderful world!! Thank you to Lori and her team of volunteers for making this evening delightful! Plan ahead to join in next year for this popular members' event :)
March 2017 - Annual Used Book & Curriculum Sale - Special thanks to the Sandercocks for organizing tonight's sale, and to all of the Moms & Dads, helpers, homeschoolers, sellers & shoppers who came out to make this evening a success! Members, if you'd like, you may advertise any leftover items in the HSCF Classifieds :) 
February 2017 - Couples' Night with veteran homeschoolers Michael & Corina Ardron. The Ardrons shared from their hearts about God's great care & love for us in the midst of homeschooling. Their theme was Inadequacy: A Catalyst for Depending on God. Their story was how a house fire just before Christmas 2015 destroyed everything familiar in minutes, except each other. Their encouragement was to press on in our families, our homeschooling & our walk with Him because we can be assured that He is with us. John 16:33. Thank you to the Ardrons, to all the Dads who came, to the Enns' for their splendid table arrangement, to Tracy for the chocolates, roses & candles centrepieces & to all the other volunteers who made this evening so very special!
January 2017 - Don't do science alone! Botanist & author, Dr. Margaret Helder spoke tonight about the need for teaching critical thinking in our homes when it comes to science. She shared her own story & talked about how to spot biases, circular reasoning, competing theories & lack of basic documentation in textbooks, and the need to teach our kids to look for help in understanding excellent science. Members, please see her handout & notes taken during her session tonight, browse Creation Science Association of Alberta where she is a board member, and visit further resources on our HSCF Links page. Also, remember to sign up your family now for the HSCF Science Fair in April! 

December 2016 - Annual Christmas Program. Thank you to the Koks for heading up this event this year :) We enjoyed a wide range of homeschool student & family presentations, followed by a feast of treats & fellowship together. Everyone's hard work showed!

November 2016 - Kristine Buchholtz brought us a whole lot of joy (well, until we were all teary at the end!) & encouragement in telling us about homeschooling in her home, and how it compares with the public school experiences most of us had. We talked about schedules, friends, testing, mastery, grading, choice of books & the value of extensive reading, using technology with discernment, and grammar, spelling, writing & communication, literary analysis, whew! What about high school? Am I doing enough? Yes, by God's grace! The bottom line is in our relationships - with Jesus & with each other. Thanks, Kristine! Announcements were made about the Nov 29th rally, a volunteer was found for the Christmas Program so sign ups are open! The HSing in Alberta page is for you to read & print & share. October 2016 - Patty Marler has a joyful way of clarifying government 'stuff' for homeschool families, and reminding us why we need to stay informed (Rom 13). She talked about the funding changes, the process, AHEA's role in advocating for freedom for HS families, and how we can be involved if we have concerns.* Tonight we also talked about Organization in our homeschools. Hannah N, Lori T. & Patty M. shared their favourite ideas such as customized planners, a ready-to-go backpack, & portfolios. Always pray & do what's best for your own family! Thank you to each of our speakers :)

CC or phone your MLA so they are aware of your concerns. AHEA has posted these suggestions for visiting your MLA. If you're not sure of how the funding allowances have changed, here's an example in the funding policy of one board. 

September 2016 - Thérèse McDonald spoke to a captivated audience tonight, graciously discussing "gentlemen brains & lady brains", how we form attachments, and how all this ties together in our homeschooling & parenting. Thérèse's outline will be posted for members in the Notes section. We look forward to inviting her to speak to HSCF members again!

August 2016 - Welcome Back! We had 40+ attendees tonight for round table discussions on the topics of Homeschooling 101, Homeschooling with Littles, Special Needs, Just for Dads, and Homeschooling thru High School. Special thanks to each of the veteran moms and dads who volunteered to lead the discussions:) Announcements were made regarding Quizzing, the Library, updating your Profile on the website, Membership, and even veggies & eggs for sale. It's great to be back & to enjoy fellowship together in support of our decision to home educate!

June 2016 - Annual Track & Field Day at the Strathcona Athletic Field. Many thanks again to Greg & Sonya for organizing this popular event for up to 180 homeschoolers! We'll all remember to bring sunscreen next year ;)  Later in June was a senior graduation for four HSCF grade 12 members - congratulations!

Monday, May 30th, 2016 - Tonight Sonya hosted a most excellent Mom's Discussion Panel. Four homeschool moms, Wendy N., Roxana C., Carol P., and Gloria H., tackled an interesting variety of questions & shared their wisdom about practical home education - in the home, from the heart. Find their discussion posted in Notes & Archives. Thank you so very much, Moms! Also, special thanks to retiring volunteers - Mark (8 years newsletter editor) & Anthony (4 years executive/treasurer). Tracy chaired our short AGM; we are thankful to God for His hand on our group. Tracy also honoured Denise for her many years of expertise, loving care & mentoring in the HSCF community. Deeply missed. Safely home.

Monday, February 29th, 2016 - Tonight was a fancy evening we called On Being a Homeschooling Couple. Friends & couples shared lots of laughs & food & encouraging words by candlelight. Chaplain Garry Engler was our guest speaker - keep doing 'the little things' well, in our marriages, homeschooling, finances & spiritual lives. Thanks everyone for making this a chocolate & roses sort of occasion!

Monday, January 25th, 2016 - It was great to be back together again! Tonight's topic of computer safety was pertinent to all our families. Computer security expert and educator Vincent Danen talked about all sorts of practical ways we can be safer online. His notes and Dawn's website blurb quiz are posted for members on the Notes & Archives page. Lori gave an update and brought examples of projects for the Science/Heritage Fair. Monday, November 30th, 2015 - What kind of relationship does your homeschool family have with first responders? Huge appreciation to Dean & Don (Edmonton Fire), Dan (Edmonton Police) and Gary (RCMP) who formed a stellar discussion panel talking about their homeschooling, career & faith, work ethic and much more. Heartfelt insight. Outstanding advice. Lots of humour :) Thank you!

Monday, October 26th, 2015 - Tonight's theme was on Being Thrifty, sharing practical tips about handling expenses in our homeschools. Michelle shared about God's faithful provision during a family health crisis; Ingrid shared lots of ideas for local and online resources, and then we had table discussion time. Monday, September 28th, 2015 - Literature & Libraries was tonight's theme for about 40 members who met for fellowship. Denise shared the history & the procedures of the HSCF Library. We are so blessed to have nearly 800 resources available to us! Wendy recommended some fresh resources & creative ways to engage our kids in reading & literature, how to discern good books for kids, and how our homeschools can make the most of books & libraries. Monday, August 31st, 2015 - Welcome Back! Dr. Brian Ray of the National Home Education Research Institute graciously started off our new homeschool year discussing the benefits of homeschooling, current research - especially regarding socialization - and Dads' involvement. After some peppy Q & A, we enjoyed round table discussion groups and being together again as Christian home educating parents. Special appreciaton to Dr. Ray and to each of the group leaders who facilitated this fantastic evening!

Monday, May 25th, 2015 -  Much appreciation to the thirty-some members who attended our AGM. It's an incredible blessing to be part of HSCF and enjoy the unity in our group! The minutes will be posted in the Members' Corner of the website. After discussion, Ted Tederoff spoke about the current political environment, had suggestions & encouragement for homeschool families, and Q&A time. Thank you!

Monday, April 27th, 2015 -  We had the Annual HSCF Science & Heritage Fair, once again in a larger venue to accommodate some 60 projects. It was a great opportunity for home educating students to showcase their hard work! Thank you to all the participants, spectators & especially the committee - Gloria, Nicole & Lori - who organized this fantastic event.

What a great turnout of Dads and Moms tonight to enjoy an evening of hilarious video clips, plenty of food & a fantastic panel of veteran Dads discussing the benefits and bumps of homeschooling. Thanks to Sheldon, Jans, Mark, Anthony, Garry and all who had a hand in helping out tonight!

Monday, January 26, 2015 - Garry started this new year off with Psalm 27:14 & prayer. Gloria talked about the upcoming science & heritage fair & creative ways to present & store your kids' projects. Mark shared engaging ways to teach science at home AND gave out lab coats as prizes :) He included this video about spirals and referenced this snowflake website. Monday, October 27, 2014 - Dr. Margaret Helder talked about how every aspect of nature testifies to God's glory. Science ought to be enjoyed and studied in our homeschools, while teaching our kids to think & interpret data critically. An accomplished biologist and educator, Dr. Helder blessed our group with her wealth of knowledge, fascinating examples, and discussion of truth. Monday, September 29, 2014 - Homeschool Mom and art instructor, Yvonne Bayne, shared eight convincing reasons why art is a valuable part of home education. Art IS a big deal! Monday, December 9th, 2013 - Thank you to Sonya, Vern, Gloria, the Pops family, ushers, kitchen helpers and others involved for ensuring the Annual HSCF Christmas Program was enjoyed by all! We had a full roster of creative kids and families share their gifts with us, with refreshments and fellowship afterwards. Also, thank you to Maegan for hosting the Quizzing demo for the kids. Merry Christmas, everyone!

Monday, November 25th, 2013 - Ever wondered if you could manage travelling with your homeschool family during the school year? It's not only possible, but with some planning, it's fantastic! Nathalie V. shared how their family participated in a work exchange to New Zealand, & Nicole G. highlighted their family's trip with another HSCF family for a week at a mission in Mexico. These families experienced life-changing perspectives! Also tonight, Melody W. brought information along about an orphan adoption ministry in Taiwan. Thank you to all!

Monday, October 28, 2013 - Guest speaker Anthony Neumann was back to share lots of reasons why board games are a valuable part of our families' homeschooling. We had a fun evening of "hands on" learning with Anthony & his family, trying out various sorts of games and seeing what could fit well with our kids' home education. Thank you, Neumann Family!

Monday, Sept 30, 2013 - Patty Marler spoke encouragingly of God's hand of blessing on home-educated children in general & the many positive elements of homeschooling in Alberta. She explained how the home education regulation is being reviewed/rewritten in AB currently & urged us to consider participating in the process as stakeholder parents. Monday, November 26th, 2012 - Dr. Mark Sandercock lit a candle with smoke! He presented lots of ideas to consider when making science fun and significant in our homeschooling. The goal of science is to learn about God's creation and bring glory to Him! See Mark's notes in Notes & Archives.

Monday, October 29th, 2012 - Patty Marler joyfully summed up God's provision regarding the new Education Act, and then showed us how to make math fun in our homeschooling! The key is to go with our kids' learning styles, and at their pace, since math builds on itself. Become intentional about seeing math all around us all day! Use board games, storybooks, or even websites as part of your math fun. And most of all, PRAY!

Monday, August 27th, 2012 - New Homeschoolers! We had a full house to hear Kristine Buchholtz speak about homeschooling, especially the differences between homeschooling and classroom learning. She encouraged us all to find what works for our own family - what's a good fit - structured, unit studies, literature-based learning, etc. There are endless choices! Even if you feel stuck at times, there is nothing like homeschooling to build relationships over time and invest in your faith and family!

Monday, February 13, 2012 - "Can I Be of Service" - Homeschool Dads Peter Gerber and Jans Pops, along with Hannah Pops, talked about developing a mindset of ministry in our home educating families. We are in a unique position to share God's love intentionally, both locally and globally! Peter shared about Hope Mission's Bethany Homes (a relatively new project for women & their kids, with gardening and horses). Jans made blood donation sound exciting! And Hannah presented how God is sending her to South Africa for the next couple of years to work with TransWorld Radio! It was excellent to hear of homeschoolers choosing to be of service and encouraging us to get involved!

Monday, December 12, 2011 - Christmas Program - Thank you to LOTS of you who came and shared your talents! We had an hour long program followed by Christmas goodies and a fun time for the teens & kids to try Bible Quizzing. Special thanks to Marianne for putting this fabulous evening together!!

Monday, November 21, 2011 - Patty Marler spoke about Homeschooling in Alberta and her role as Government Liaison for AHEA. She encouraged us to be proactive in our relationship with Alberta Education, as we have many good things in place with the current Home Education Regulation (2006, p.30ff), but we must not become complacent. Patty's notes can be found on the "political updates" page of the AHEA website, including information about how to have a positive visit with our MLAs. Please contact Patty here if you'd like further information or resources.
Also tonight, Laurie Roberts shared about the needs in Mexico and her various roles there providing opportunities for orphans in leadership and language training, and also Spanish coaching for English speakers.
And Karen Jarrah outlined Classical Conversations which combines classical learning with a Biblical worldview. Anyone interested please contact Karen.

Monday, October 17, 2011 - Calvin Smith of www.creation.com gave a compelling presentation about the importance of having a Biblical worldview as foundational. He discussed the authority of God's Word and why creation matters - it does affect our faith! He discussed topics such as bias, faith, science, facts, origins, meaning, death, evolution and atheism, all while modelling a Biblical response to skeptics and to Christians who accept atheist tenets (evolution as origin; millions of years of history, & that the Bible cannot be read as plainly written).

Monday, September 19, 2011 - Ken Noster reminded us of the freshness we have in each new day as we encourage our children's learning! He talked about the stages of learning and about developing useful program plans. Ken referred to a list of learning outcomes for students which can be found on Page 35 of the Home Education Handbook. Stewart Nelson also shared about the value of HSLDA. The vibrant Q & A sessions were much appreciated!

The quality of the projects and the enthusiasm of the kids was such a joy. We had a great variety of projects; almost twice as many as last year, thanks to our new venue! Monday, December 13, 2010 - Christmas Program - We had a wonderful evening enjoying the talents of our home-educated kids! We heard violins, guitars, poems, singing, and piano-playing. So much variety! We also had a good time of fellowship afterwards. Thanks to everyone who came out, and to Rob Drost who emceed the program.

Monday, November 15th, 2010 - What a great way to add zest to homeschooling! Anthony Neumann, self-proclaimed board game geek, along with his wife & oodles of games, showed us how to have fun & keep learning!

Monday, October 18th, 2010 - Have you ever wondered what it means to magnify God? Thank you to Yvonne Nickel, who helped us learn about God's provision for us in creation, by studying the details! Marianne reminded us to visit our MLAs and share with them that - contrary to opinion out there - traditional home education is not child abandonment!

Monday, September 20th, 2010 - We welcomed back a full house! Many thanks to our guest speaker Paul van den Bosch who spoke about Why Homeschool? It's good for our kids and it's good for us! Also, Landon Coleman, representing Augustine College in Ottawa, related his experience as a student there.

Monday, June 7th, 2010 - Track and Field Day - Thank you, Sonya and many volunteers! There were a record 180 kids registered this year, most of whom came out despite the sprinkles. You can see a few pics in the gallery.

Monday, April 26, 2010  - Science & Heritage Fair - Thank you to Michelle, Nicole & Gloria for organizing this delightful event; also to Mr.Twa, all the judges & volunteers!! We had 33 projects, each reflecting our Creator and the creativity of families. See pics in the gallery :)
