Summer Reading

Dear FEAST Families;

Wow! Another year of Summer Reading has passed already! We had a great time at our end-of-year party, with pizza provided from Domino’s and a caramel corn popcorn machine donated by William Trujello from Jump On It party rentals.

We had a total of 89 participants this year, and 43 of them read at least $20 worth! Here are our winners from each age group:

4-7: Elisabeth Torres (52 books), Elizabeth Hurlin (48 books), Andrew Hurlin (39 books)

8-11: Christian Hurlin (60 books), Timothy Watje (54 books), Kert Walker (45 books)

12-14: Josiah Watje (129 books), Katherine Hurlin (121 books), Rachel Olson (42 books)

Teen program: Sarah Hurlin (39 books), Amaris Watje (14 books), Rachel Walker and Hannah Walker (5 books each)

Teen volunteer hours: Hannah Walker (54 hours), Rachel Walker (51 hours), Julia Davila (50 hours)

I want to especially thank S. A. Reads, who donated 100 books for us to give out as prizes.  Everyone who came to the party took home at least one book! S. A. Reads is a non-profit group to promote literacy in San Antonio. Their organization has two parts: they help at-risk children (and adults) to read at their grade level through after-school programs and summer programs; they also have a book bank, where they collect new and gently used book donations and distribute them to other non-profit literacy programs—like FEAST Summer Reading!

Thanks to all our volunteers—especially Rachel Walker, who did all of the solicitations for prizes. We had awesome prizes this year thanks to her!  Our other volunteers were Hannah Walker, Julia Davila, Joel Davila, Sarah Hurlin, and Lucas Marlin. They helped out a lot when I couldn’t be there.

Last, but not least, thanks to our generous sponsors who donated prizes for the drawings!
