PODCASTS

To supplement our history programs this year, and to provide access to some online enrichment activities and resources, CHOOSE CT has added this page to our website.  For those who may be unfamiliar with this particular media format, please read on for a very brief introduction to podcasts.

1) Dictionary definition of podcast: a digital recording of a radio broadcast or similar program, made available on the Internet for downloading to a personal audio player.

2) The word podcast is a contraction of the term "iPod" and the word "broadcast." The former refers to the small Apple media player; the latter to a radio broadcast.

3) Podcasts are similar to MP3 music files that can be listened to on a computer, transferred to a music player, or burned to a CD.

4) Podcasts vary in length from a few minutes to more than an hour. New episodes can be created hourly, daily, and weekly. Some are professionally produced, while others are done by amateurs.

5) Software programs known as podcatchers can check the Web for new episodes of subscribed podcasts. If an episode is available, the podcatcher downloads it. Common podcatchers are iTunes, Yahoo Music Engine, and Winpodder.

6) Many podcasts are free. Some require a small subscription fee.
