CHESS - Christian Home Educators' Support System

RESOURCES

Our purpose is to provide financial and academic opportunities that benefit individual CHESS families and CHESS as a group and keep accurate financial records of CHESS income and expenditures.

If you have any questions, please contact John and Miriam Woods, our Resources Coordinators.

Areas of Ministry

Bookkeeping
CHESS operates under New Covenant Christian Church as a non-profit (501c3) organization and we keep careful track of our "books" to honor both the Lord and New Covenant for supporting us! If you spend your own money on CHESS activities, please submit a re-imbursement form to our bookkeeper so that we can track our spending. We appreciate your willingness to serve CHESS with your finances, but if we don't know how much is being spent on an area then we won't know what to anticipate for expenses if you pass that area on to a new coordinator! CHESS is able to accept tax-deductible donations and can provide you with a receipt for tax purposes.

Book Ordering
CHESS members can participate in discounted group book orders through Scholastic and God's World Books, as well as discounted rates on the weekly "God's World News", where current events are related with a Biblical worldview.

Boxtops & Labels for Education
CHESS participates in both the BoxTops and Labels for Education programs and we are so excited about what this means for CHESS families! Money received through these programs is set aside as grants for various CHESS needs during the school year! Keep Collecting!

CAP Curriculum Assistance Program
Do you shop with coupons? Do you search for discounts? Then you should DEFINITELY be participating in CAP! Through CAP, you simply purchase gift certificates at face value (You pay $10 and get a $10 certificate, for example) for most of your favorite stores and restaurants and you get a "kick-back" at the end of the year of between 2% and 24% of the face value of the certificate! CAP is a great way to keep on budget, and get "paid" to do so!

Lending Library
If you've never visited the CHESS Library at New Covenant Christian Church, now is the time! Just visit the receptionist in the office and she'll loan you the key. Be sure to fill out a "check-out" card if you borrow anything, and remember: IT'S FREE! What a great way to share our homeshooling books, magazines, videos, audiotapes and other materials that we have purchased, read or used once and then left to gather dust. We can support one another by sharing resources. Check it out!
By the way, if you shop at Gift and Bible Stores, ask for Library Stamps at check out and give them to the CHESS Librarian. She can use them to buy more materials for our library! Stamps are worth 5 cents for every dollar you spend!

Meijer Community Rewards
The Meijer Community Reward program is a great way to earn money for your homeschool and all you have to do is "swipe" your card when you purchase items at Meijer. The reward you earn is based on the amount you spend at Meijer each month. You can earn between .5% and 1% of what you spend.  The group number for CHESS is 785483.

Reading Incentive Programs
CHESS keeps you "in the know" about programs provided through local business to encourage your kids to read, set reading goals, and achieve them! Be sure to check your CHESS newsletter regularly, as new programs "pop up" all the time!

Recycling Ink Cartridges
CHESS can earn $3 for every empty ink jet printer cartridge we collect for recycling. The money earned can further our ministry to homeschooling families.

Science Library
CHESS has been blessed to receive a wonderful array of science equipment from Great Lakes Christian College that we can lend out to current CHESS members.

Used Curriculum Sale
CHESS organizes a way for you to sell the curriculum and books that you have used as well as purchase books and materials from others. So you can make some money by selling your books and save lots of money by buying from previous owners. Our sale is at a new time and new location.  This year's date is May 8, 2010 - location TBD.
