BECCA'S CLASSES AT THE SALVATION ARMY, 2009-10
Hi Everyone!
We are so excited that Becca Hubbard is able to teach enrichment classes at the Salvation Army again this year! Sounds like many of you missed the information we sent out last week. Her classes will not begin until the week of September 13 (the week after P.E. and Homelink begin) so you still have plenty of time to sign up. Back by popular demand is her Exploring Ancient Egypt class, along with a new class called Laura Ingalls Wilder: Books and Beyond.
If you are interested in either class, contact Becca Hubbard at cbhubbard@htc.netor 618-281-4944 and let her know the age of your student and what day and time would work best for you. If Becca gets 6 students she will form an “official” class. Becca is trying to plan both classes around the Homeschool P.E. and Homelink class times on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays.
For example, some parents have already asked Becca if she would teach Ancient Egypt from 9:45 – 10:45 on Tuesdays before Homelink Art class begins at 11:00 am. There are also a lot of families that want a Tuesday Laura Ingalls Wilder class for 8-12 year - olds from 12:00 – 1:00 and/or 1:00 – 2:00 pm between the two P.E. classes. Others would like an Ancient Egypt and/or Laura class on Thursdays at 10:45 and at 1:00 pm. There are countless possibilities and combinations of classes. Here are a few possible times…
Tuesdays
9:45 – 10:45 am - Egypt for age 8-12
12:00 – 1:00 pm - Laura for age 8-12
1:00 – 2:00 pm – Laura for age 8-12
Wednesdays
9:00 – 10:00 am - Egypt or Laura for age 9-12
10:05 am – 11:05 am – Egypt or Laura for age 7-8
11:10 am– 12:10 pm – Egypt or Laura for age 8-12
Thursdays
10:45 am – 11:45 am - Egypt or Laura for age 9-12
11:45 am – 12:45 pm – Egypt or Laura for age7-8
1:00 – 2:00 pm - Egypt or Laura for age 8-12
Below are all of the details you need to know about the classes. Be sure and contact Becca ASAP so she can begin to make plans. I know your students will really enjoy the classes!
See you at the Salvation Army and Homelink! Kerrie & Cathy
IMPORTANT INFORMATION- BECCA HUBBARD’S ENRICHMENT CLASSES
- This is Becca Hubbard’s second year teaching enrichment classes for S.H.A.R.E. Becca has a degree in Elementary Education from the University of Illinois. Her twenty-two years of teaching experience have encompassed pre-K through adult education, the majority of those years in full-time elementary classrooms. She has tutored in a variety of subjects at Sylvan Learning Center and privately. She is married to Homeschool P.E. teacher Cort Hubbard.
- Exploring Ancient Egypt,– Let's travel back in time to see life in Ancient Egypt. We will begin with their geography, learn about their daily life, and of course cover pharaohs, mummies, pyramids, and hieroglyphics! Some of our projects will include a salt dough map of Egypt, writing our names in hieroglyphics, and constructing a sugar cube step pyramid! We will finish with an Egyptian Feast! Don't miss out on the fun! (A class on science in Ancient Egypt will be offered in the spring.)
- Laura Ingalls Wilder: Books and Beyond- This class is a combination of exploring the life of Laura Ingalls Wilder and experiencing some of the foods, songs, dances, and projects from her books. Some of the activities will include making butter, hasty pudding, and molasses-on-snow-candy; making a clove-studded apple; and learning a little square dancing and clogging!
- Becca’s classes at the Salvation Army for the first semester will begin on Tuesday, September 14 or Wednesday, September 15 or Thursday, September 16at the Salvation Army Gateway Citadel Building, 824 Union Rd., St. Louis Mo., 63123. The first semester classes will run for 13 weeks, until the week of December 14, 15 & 16. There will be no classes on November 23, 24, 25 because of the Thanksgiving holiday. The class is one hour per week. The same class can be offered multiple times.
- To register for the classes, please contact Becca Hubbard at cbhubbard@htc.netor 618-281-4944 and let her know the age of your student and which class you might be interested in – and on what day at which time. If Becca gets 6 students she will form an “official” class.
- Becca attempts to coordinate her classes with the Homeschool P.E. classes that are going on at the same time. She is also trying to coordinate with the Homelink elementary classes at St. Andrew (only 5 minutes away). There is age flexibility in both Becca’s classes, the P.E. classes, and the Homelink classes.
- For more information on Homeschool P.E., contact Cort Hubbard at Cort_Hubbard@usc.salvationarmy.orgor check the SHARE website at the “P.E. Classes 2010-2011” link on the left sidebar. For more information about Homelink classes, contact Kerrie Tate at kertatehomelink@aol.comor check the SHARE website at the “Homelink Classes” link on the left sidebar. Homeschool P.E. and Homlink classes start the week after Labor Day (One week earlier than Becca’s classes). To access the SHARE website go to www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share.
- Classes will be $5 per class per student. Payment for the entire semester will be due on the first day of class, if possible. The semester price would be $75 ($5 X 13 weeks, plus a $10 materials/copy fee). Families can work out a payment plan with Becca if necessary. Payment plan must be decided before the first day of class so valuable class time is not wasted.
- Becca has designed her own curriculum for Exploring Ancient Egypt and Laura Ingalls Wilder: Books and Beyond. There will be no curriculum purchase required. Stay tuned for an update on school supplies needed for the classes (binder, pencils, markers, pen, etc.).
- Because of space limitations, it’s best not to have parents and siblings in the classroom (unless you are an "official" helper). We've tried to have an "open" classroom before and it gets very crowded and noisy. If your child is scared to go in, you can stay for a little while in the beginning and then perhaps wait outside the door in the hallway. If you have small children with you, they cannot “hang out” unattended in the hallway. The Salvation Army is a VERY busy place and we have to follow their hallway rules. Parents of students in Becca’s classes have permission from the Salvation Army to go into the nursery (next door to the classroom) with their preschoolers, toddlers and babies. The nursery is not for school age children. If you have school age children, you can wait with them in the nearby fellowship hall or outside. Or – they can take P.E. classes or classes offered nearby at Homelink (See contact info above).
- Parents can leave the Salvation Army building during class, but please make sure that Becca has your cell phone number. It is also a good idea to have a “designated adult” that your child can go to in an emergency.
