"THE NUTCRACKER” IMPORTANT INFORMATION
- We are attending the Thursday, December 17, 11:45 am school performance of St. Louis Ballet's The Nutcracker. If you cannot attend with our group at 11:45 am there is one other school performance at 9:45 am, but it is almost full. Homeschool families are allowed to sign up as their own "school, " but it is easier for St. Louis Ballet if we attend as a group and give them one check. Go to www.stlouisballet.org for more information about school and regular performances. The website also has the popular The Nutcracker Activity Guide and info about the Sugar Plum Fairy Tea Party.
- The Nutcracker school performance is about 1 hour long and is the same as the (much more expensive!) narrated shortened version performed as a matinee on December 19, 20 & 22. The regular performance of The Nutcracker is over 2 hours long and performed in the evenings on December 18, 19, 20 & 22.
- The Nutcracker will be performed in a brand new location this year! Instead of Edison Theater, it will be at the beautiful Blanche M. Touhill Performing Arts Center on the campus of University of Missouri - St. Louis. The official address is One University Blvd, St. Louis MO 63121. St. Louis Ballet changed locations because the Touhill has a much bigger stage, holds many more people, has convenient parking, and is on one of the Metrolink stops. For more information, go to www.touhill.org and click on “Directions & Map” and other helpful links. You can also call them at 314- 516-4949.
- St. Louis Ballet is a professional ballet company, with Gen Horiuchi as Artistic Director. The performers in The Nutcracker are professional dancers. with some of the childrens' roles filled by student dancers from the St. Louis Ballet School (many are homeschoolers!).
- The Nutcracker is $6.00 per person (children and adults are the same price). If your child sits on your lap you don't have to pay for their seat.
- To sign-up for The Nutcracker, print and fill out a Registration Form and mail it in with your payment. There is no online registration for this event. We need your payment when you sign up if you want us to hold your spot. Make your checks payable to SHARE, and mail payment with a completed registration form to Kerrie Tate at 617 Bacon Ave., St. Louis MO 63119.
- The Nutcracker Registration Form is attached to this email, or can be downloaded from the SHARE website. Go to www.homeschool-life.com/mo/share/ and click on to “Nutcracker 2009.” The form includes your name, address, phone number, email address, and names & ages of those attending.
-- We must give St. Louis Ballet our seat count by Friday, October 23. They have extended our deadline by one week! If there are extra seats available after October 23, St. Louis Ballet will let us know and we might be able to add more people. Last year, there were no extra seats and about 150 from our group attended a 2nd school performance on a different day. This year that will not be possible - the school performances are all on one day.
- Meet in the main lobby of the Touhill Center by 11:00 or 11:15am. Allow plenty of time to walk from the parking lot. We will begin lining up down the hallway near the entrance to the theater. There are NO individual tickets for the performance. We have one master ticket and we are seated together as a group between 11:00 and 11:15am.
- The performance is for school age children, grades K through 12, and their parents/teachers/chaperones. Preschool students can attend if they are able to sit attentively (and survive the wait in line!). St. Louis Ballet understands that homeschool groups will have more adults in attendance than the regular schools, but the majority of our seats need to be for students.
- If your children are old enough, they can be dropped off without an adult. We will be responsible for them during the performance. Let us know ahead of time so we can make arrangements.
- If you are late, tell the ushers that you are with the SHARE homeschool group. They will seat you in the next available seats -- but maybe not with our group. The Touhill arrangement is different than Powell Hall. We are NOT allowed to save seats. Once they seat our group, others will be filing in quickly right behind us. If you want to sit with the group you MUST be there in our line when they seat us. Last year about 150 people were late (out of 400) and they ended up in the balcony while the rest of us were on the floor in the center (but they loved their balcony seats so it was OK!).
- There is no certain "dress code" at the school performances. People usually dress up at the evening performances, but the daytime shows are a little more casual. As we say about Powell Hall – it is still a good idea to look nicer than when you are just playing in the backyard!
- NO food is allowed in the theater. It is helpful to let the kids have a snack in the car on the way to the performance, especially if they had an early breakfast!
- Please continue checking your email for important updates! If a friend or relative is bringing your child/children please send me their email address - or be sure to forward them updates about The Nutcracker performance
