The ASVAB Career Exploration Program —Free at FEAST
September 21 at 9am    ASVAB Test Session (arrive at 8:30am)
October 19t at 10am    ASVAB Post-Test results interpretation and career workshop

FEAST enters its second school year offering this federally funded program that is free to home school students, ages 15-19, who are categorized in grades 10-12.
Your child’s decision to enter college, technical or vocational school, military service or the civilian world of work after high school is an important one. The ASVAB Career Exploration Program can help.
The ASVAB Career Exploration Program includes eight individual tests covering verbal and math skills, mechanical knowledge, electronics, and several other areas. It also produces three Career Exploration Scores for Verbal Skills, Math Skills, and Science and Technical Skills. These three scores serve as one of several pieces of information about your child that can aid in the exploration of a wide variety of career options. The ASVAB is offered at no cost and no obligation to high school students.
Your child can use the ASVAB results along with Exploring Careers: The ASVAB Career Exploration Guide. Every student who takes the ASVAB receives a copy of the Guide. It has a series of activities that guides students through the exploration of occupations and planning the next steps to achieve their career goals. The Guide has recently been updated and now includes career information on approximately 400 occupations. Students can explore these occupations and consider whether their skills, as measured by the three Career Exploration Scores, and interests, as measured by an interest inventory, match the demands of occupations that appeal to them. Research has shown that students who participate in the ASVAB Program experience less career indecision, enjoy greater confidence in making career decisions, and consider more thoughtfully their options than do students who do not participate in the ASVAB Program.
New testing dates are being planned! Please check in again as new dates will be posted as soon as they are available!

College Prep—PSAT Test

October 13, 8am–11am
(Registration deadline is Monday, September 20, online with FEAST)

FEAST has been blessed again this year to be allowed to register students to take the PSAT with the students at the Christian Academy of San Antonio (CASA). The test will be administered at CASA on Wednesday, October 13, at 8 am. CASA is located at 325 Castroville Road. Cost for the test is $25.
CASA is doing this as a courtesy for our FEAST students and have asked that parents not call the school for any instructions or with any questions whatsoever. We are asking everyone that intends to test with CASA to abide by this request and not disrupt the school by calling with questions. If you do call the school, your child will be disqualified from testing and your test fee will not be refunded.
CASA has set aside 50 tests for our home schooled students. To register, please go to the FEAST Website and register and pay online. After you have registered, you may pick up your Student Bulletin study materials from FEAST. The PSAT/NMSQT Student Bulletin includes a full-length practice test. We encourage you to use this material to help your child prepare for the test.
Deadline for registration is Monday, September 20 or until all 50 spaces are taken. If you have questions, please contact
Ruth Perez at ruth@homeschoolfeast.
What Is the PSAT Test for 7th–11th Grade Students?
PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. It’s a standardized test that provides firsthand practice for the SAT Reasoning Test™. It also gives you a chance to enter National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) scholarship programs. It is important to note that taking the PSAT in the 11th grade is how students qualify for the National Merit Scholarship program. Some universities offer scholarships based on this test alone. Students may take the PSAT as early as 7th grade to qualify for the Duke University Talent Search*. It is also a good first step in preparing for the SAT that students will need to take for college admissions. Results will help students understand the areas that they need to improve before taking the SAT for the first time. The PSAT/NMSQT measures: critical reading skills, math problem-solving skills, and writing skills. For more detailed information about the PSAT, visit www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about.html.
What Is the Duke TIP Test for 4th & 7th Grade?
         (Registration deadline is October 1)
*The Duke University Talent Search, typically know as Duke Tip is a scholarship identification process to locate gifted and talented students at grade 7. Participation in the Duke TIP testing can guarantee your child educational resources as well as scholarships that will follow your child into their college level years. To qualify a 7th grade student must have scored in the 95th percentile or higher on a grade-level test. (6th grade students that did standardized testing with FEAST last spring and scored 95% or higher on any one subject qualifies for the Duke TIP SAT or ACT Testing plus all types of fun educational study materials, newsletters and camps.) There is also a 4th grade TIP program that has the same qualification standard of testing at the 95% on a standardized test. The average home school student usually test 30 – 39 points higher than the average student in Public or Private school therefore, Duke realizes that many of our home school students fall in the 95% range and therefore qualify for the Duke TIP program and special recognition. FEAST does standardized testing on campus each spring and is a registered TIP Private School and has a limited number of brochures and paper applications available at the bookstore front desk. Application deadline is October 1 for the fall test date of December 4, 2010 for SAT and December 11, 2010 for ACT to be held at UT San Antonio, Saint Mary’s University or Our Lady Of The Lake University all located in San Antonio. For test dates and more information go to www.tip.duke.edu/7benefits. After you have registered for the TIP test, you will receive Talent Search materials and practice materials within 5 weeks of enrollment so sign up early!

Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP)

LACK OF MONEY is the main reason prospects give for not going to Texas A&M...Well this excuse is no longer valid. If a prospect really wants to be an Aggie in The Corps the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) could be the answer. The SMP is an excellent internship between the Texas National Guard and the Army ROTC, which can provide all the financial assistance required for a student to attend Texas A&M. If a prospect begins in high school, this program can pay up to $131,785 to attend Texas A&M and become a dedicated Texas Army National Guard Officer. If the prospect doesn't want to be tied to the Guard and wants to go on Active Duty, the SMP program will pay $101,785. Remember, total cost to attend Texas A&M over four years is less than $80,000. If you have a high school prospect looking for college funds direct them to look into this program. For details contact Spencer Bulger (866) 759-0737.

Please keep checking back for more information on college and career.
