UPPER ELEMENTARY CLASSES

 

SCIENCE CLASSES

 

 

 

Apologia Zoology 2 & 3 (combined)       Instructors:   Kelly Allin & Christy Kennard

 

Time: all year           9:00 – 10:00 and 11:00 – 12:00

 

Grade level: 3rd & 4th grades at 9:00; 5th & 6th grades at 11:00

 

Homework: Daily work is assigned for the 5th & 6th graders. 3rd & 4th graders will have less work and may only need to work 2-3 days per week to complete their assignments. Weekly assignments should take approximately 20 minutes per day for 3rd-4th grade and 30-40 minutes per day for 5th – 6th.

Class Fees: $12.50 per semester

 

Class Description: In this class students will learn about creatures from the ocean created on the fifth day. You’ll begin with a big splash from the whales and dolphins, then spy on seals, and meet manatees before swimming with the sea turtles, snakes, and salamanders. Students will then move on and learn about creatures created on the sixth day. The class will go on a safari through jungles, deserts, forests, farms, and even their own backyard. As with all Apologia elementary classes students will continue the practice of narration, keeping a notebook of what they have learned, and participate in hands-on activities.

 

Apologia Astronomy       Instructor:  Amanda Fisher

 

Time: all year           9:00 – 10:00 and 11:00 – 12:00

 

Grade level: 3rd & 4th grades at 9:00; 5th & 6th grades at 11:00

 

Homework: Work is similar to that of the Zoology class, but will move through the book at a slower pace covering one book instead of two.  5th & 6th grade students will spend 2-3 days each week, approximately 30 minutes per day, to complete their science homework.   3rd-4th grade students will spend approximately 20 minutes two times a week to complete their assignments.

Class Fees: $12.50 per semester

 

Class Description: In this class students will learn about the sun and all nine planets.  Or is it eight?   Students will also learn about the earth's moon, the asteroid belt and the Kuiper belt.  Students then learn about stars and galaxies outside our solar system and finally learn about space travel and what it takes to be an astronaut.  As with all Apologia elementary classes students will continue the practice of narration, keeping a notebook of what they have learned, and participate in hands-on activities.

 

Abeka Science 3/4:                        Instructor:  Stephany Williams

 

Time: all year           9:00 – 10:00

 

Grade level: 3rd & 4th

 

Homework: Weekly assignments should take approximately 20 minutes per day.

 

Required Curriculum/Supplies: 

·         Understanding God’s World 4th grade student text (Abeka). 

·         Students may also possibly need Understanding God’s World Activity Book (Abeka), please wait until further notice before purchasing the activity book.

 

Class Fees: $12.50 per semester

 

Class Descriptions: Students will enjoy this fascinating presentation of things that they can see, observe, and understand in the world around them. They learn about insects, how to recognize the plants they see every day, how to attract birds to their own back yards, how to use field guides, how to interpret cloud formations, and how to identify rocks. Students will appreciate the miracle of plant germination, the causes of weather, the God-given provisions for life on earth, the design of the starry heavens, the ecology of the ocean depths, and many other aspects of God's creative genius.   Class time will be spent doing activities and experiments that reinforce the content of the book.

 

 

Abeka Science 5/6                        Instructor:  Patricia Bricker

 

Time: all year           11:00 – 12:00

 

Grade level: 5th & 6th

 

Homework: Weekly assignments should take approximately 30 minutes per day.

 

Required Curriculum/Supplies: Observing World 6th grade student text (Abeka)

 

Class Fees: $12.50 per semester

 

Class Description:  Students will learn about invertebrates, plants, forces of the earth, the universe, space travel, materials, and much more. This course presents the universe as the direct creation of God and refutes the man-made idea of evolution. Projects and experiments will be conducted in class each week to reinforce what your student will be learning.

 

 

 

LANGUAGE ARTS CLASSES

 

Language Arts 3                Instructor:  Amy Neumann

 

Time: all year           10:00 – 11:00

 

Grade level: 3rd grade

 

Homework: Daily homework will be assigned from this class. 

 

Required Curriculum/Supplies: Writing Tales 1 & Teacher’s Guide

 

Class Fee: $5 per semester

 

Class Description: Writing Tales teaches grammar level students how to write by studying and re-writing classic tales and fables.  Take your child through in-depth studies of 15 different fables and fairy tales, and guide them through the process of re-writing each story in their own words. The classical approach is used for a thorough study and analysis of each story. Plenty of practice is included in grammar, copy work, spelling, and vocabulary, making Writing Tales a fully comprehensive language arts curriculum. Some of the stories include The Town Mouse & the Country Mouse, Androcles, Julius Caesar, and The Princess & the Pea.  Spelling is not included in this curriculum.  You will need to add spelling at home.

Class Description:  In this language arts class students read classic literature and discuss in class.  Students are taught how to create key word outlines and begin learning to write paragraphs using the IEW format.  Grammar and spelling are not included in this course; you will need to add these at home.

All history courses use a classical approach to help students retain knowledge of the time period they are studying.

 

Mystery of History Vol. I                 Instructor:   Lindy Doehner

Class Description:  This history course begins with creation and goes through the resurrection of Jesus Christ.  Each week students are assigned reading from the text, timeline activities, memory cards and some of the activities from the book.  In class, students will complete the hands-on activities from the book including crafts, discussion, and other activities not assigned as homework.  Quizzes and tests will be given in the 5th & 6th grade class.  A notebook will be kept by all students for this course.  A history project will be completed by each student in the fall semester.

 

Exploration 1850’s – Modern Times      Instructor:  Trace Griesel

 

Time: 10:00 – 11:00; and 11:00 – 12:00

Class Description: Students will study world and U.S. history from 1850 to modern times with a number of informative books and a detailed timeline book. The course will integrate history with composition as you make a history notebook and write paragraphs or essays according to the language arts classes they are taking. They will learn about U.S. presidents and U.S geography with a brief trip through all 50 states (completing a two-year study that began in Exploration to 1850).

 

Texas History                                   Instructor:  Traci Winkler

 

Time: 11:00 – 12:00

 

Grade levels: 3rd & 4th

 

Homework:  Weekly reading will be required as well as some short writing assignments.  We will keep a time line and memorize key people and events.  A project will be completed by each student in the fall semester.

Class Fee:  $10 per semester

 

Class Description:  The first quarter will focus on the Native Texas tribes.   The class will then focus on Texas History from the early explorers to present day.

 

 

 

NON-ACADEMIC MORNING CLASSES

 

One of the following 2 classes may be taken if a child is not enrolling in one of the morning academic classes: 

 

Math Games This class is intended for those few students who will not be in a core curriculum class.   Students participate in great games including Jellybeans, Muggins, and other games that will reinforce math skills.

 

Logic/Strategy games This class is intended for those few students who will not be in a core curriculum class. Various age appropriate strategy games and logic worksheets are available to challenge students during this hour.

 

 

ELECTIVE  CLASSES

 

Electives for K-6th are offered after lunch from 12:30 - 3:00

 

All classes are third through sixth grade unless otherwise noted.

 

Art   (taught by Kathy Wilson)   Description to come later.

 

Boys Club   (taught by Mr. Daryl Charbula) Boys will enjoy this hands-on class filled with fun activities while strengthening their character and learning good citizenship. FEE: $15 per semester

 

Cooking    (taught by Rita Balciunas)  Learn many new delicious recipes in one the most popular elective classes offered. Safety in the kitchen will be emphasized. Please advise the teacher of any food allergy on the enrollment form. FEE: $12 per semester

Computer Applications   (taught by Sandy Ward)(grades 5-8; fall only) (grades 3-6; spring only)   Learn basic computer skills such as Word, Excel,  and Power Point.  The purchase of a book may be required.  Students will need a flash drive. Class is limited to 10 students.  Lab Fee: $25 per semester

 

Computer Programming (taught by Sandy Ward) (grades 5-8; spring only)  Description to come later. Class is limited to 10 students.  Students will need a flash drive.  Lab Fee:  $25 per semester

 

Galloping the Globe  (taught by Becky Soliz) Children will create a notebook as they visit different countries, learn the continents and experience a variety of cultures.  The children have an option of completing their trip around the globe by taking the class for the entire year or taking the class for only one semester.  The second semester will be a continuation of the first but will not be dependent on the information contained in the first semester.   FEE: $5 per semester

 

Girls Club (taught by Melinda Presswood)  Girls will enjoy this hands–on class filled with fun activities while strengthening their character and learning good citizenship. FEE: $15 per semester

 

Beginning Guitar (taught by Kathie Webster)    Learn to play the guitar in a group setting. Chords and theory will be explored. Students will need to bring their own guitar to class each week. Please note that practice is strongly encouraged in order to advance playing skills.  FEE: $12

 

Intermediate Guitar (taught by Kathie Webster) (grades 4-7)    Students will continue expanding their guitar skills. Entrance into this class will be with permission of the guitar teacher only. Please note that practice is strongly encouraged in order to advance playing skills. FEE $12

 

Money Matters (taught by Viriginia Jones) This is a fun and creative class that is designed to help children understand and apply the biblical concept of stewardship. Puzzles, and other fun activities and exercises will be used to teach children godly money management principles.

 

PE    (taught by Mary-Margaret Eberhardt and Kimberly Smith: 3-4,5-8 )   Students will actively participate in various outdoor and indoor games. The focus of this class will be healthy living and exercise in order to develop confidence and coordination skills.

 

Prima Latina   (taught by Krista Kumahata)   Prima Latina was developed for young children who are still becoming familiar with English grammar and wish to learn Latin at a slower pace.  Prima Latina is the perfect choice for those who would like to start Latin early and lay the foundation of a rigorous language arts program.  Required Curriculum:  Prima Latina (Student and Teacher Guide)  Fee:  $10

 

Reading Club- Ancients  (taught by Trace Griesel)   In order to complete all read-alouds for history class, parents may find this class helpful.   Trace will read from the read a-loud books assigned in the Mystery of History classes.  It will reduce the amount of reading you have to complete during the week.

 

Reading Club- 1850 to Modern Times  (taught by Trace Griesel)   In order to complete all read-alouds for history class, parents may find this class helpful.  Trace will read from the read a-louds assigned in the 1850 – Current history class.  It will reduce the amount of reading you have to complete during the week.

 

Recorders  (taught by Sarah Kruse)   Learn to play the recorder in a group setting. Student will need to bring their recorder each week. Please note that practice is strongly advised in order to advance in this class.   Fee: $12 (includes recorder & book)

 

Sewing    (taught by Maria Wright and Judy Atkins)   Students will learn to use a sewing machine and learn many sewing skills. Various projects will be completed in class. Please indicate on your enrollment form if your student will be bringing their own sewing machine.  FEE: $25

 

Study Hall    (monitored by Stacie Lemley and Rena Haldiman)(grades 6-8)   This class will focus on finishing work for the day.

 

Super Math 3    (taught by Kristin Novilla)   SuperMath is a program that is specifically geared to mental calculation. The skills SuperMath teaches will enable your child to maximize his/her ability in math. Students must have a basic understanding of addition and subtraction although their skills may be far from perfect. The program teaches mastery of basic skills and introduces borrowing, carrying, multiplication and division concepts, as well as rapid calculation skills. Please note that this class will have homework. Students are required to do daily math drills in order to advance in this class.  Note: Students are required to purchase SuperMath 3 before class begins. The current price is $130.00 - $150.00.  Fee:  $5

 

Super Math 4    (taught by Kristin Novilla) Prerequisite: SuperMath 3. Students will complete the mastery of the basic skills and advance into powers, derivation of roots, fractions, and decimals. The student will also continue to acquire rapid calculations skills.  Please note that this class will have homework. Students are required to do daily math drills in order to advance in this class.  Note: Students are required to purchase SuperMath 4 before class begins. The current price is $130.00 - $150.00.     Fee:  $5

 

Typing   (taught by Wanda Altom)    The ability to touch type or keyboarding is an incredible useful skill for anyone who uses a computer. This class is designed to teach, develop and practice, step by step, typing skills.   All books needed for this class will be provided and belong to FAITH Co-op.  Class is limited to 10 students.  Students will need to bring a flash drive to class.  Lab Fee: $25 per semester
