2013 IAHE LEGISLATIVE DAY RECEPTION
IAHE Legislative Day Dessert Reception
March 14, 2013
Please note the change of date.
Legislative Day is an annual formal business reception hosted by IAHE to give our lawmakers the opportunity to see the quality of home education in Indiana by presenting displays with academic, social, organizational, and testing information. Home educators from around the state are encouraged to participate.
PURPOSE: Legislative Day is a formal dessert reception at the Capitol hosted by IAHE. The purpose of this event is to give our legislators the opportunity to see the quality achieved by home education in Indiana without government funding or regulation. This is accomplished by presenting academic, social, organizational, and testing displays. Most legislators attend specifically to meet their own constituents and to connect with those in their district who home educate.
PARTICIPATION: Those who privately home educate from around the state are encouraged to apply. Participants must be registered on the IAHE website who will be representing only private home education to our legislators. Applications for participation are available on the website calendar and must be received by the deadlines specified below. Further questions may be emailed to the Debi Ketron firstname.lastname@example.org .
CONTENT: Displays may include history, art, science projects, unit studies, CAP, TeenPact, GenJ, Speech and Debate, Honor Society, Congressional Medal achievements, 4-H, Chess Club, sports, and family projects. Teen Ambassadors tour legislators around the displays while students play classical background music. The desserts provided by IAHE and the opportunity to interact with these unique families make this a nice event.
VISITORS: Adults with younger children who desire to visit Legislative Day with a view toward participating in upcoming years are invited to drop by for an hour. Please observe the dress and conduct protocols, and keep your children quietly with you. The space constraints of numerous display tables and heavy foot traffic make strollers prohibitive.
PROTOCOLS: We are guests in a professional office building conducting the official business of our state. Noise and activity must be kept to a minimum. Because the intent of Legislative Day is to make the most effective presentation and facilitate conversation with our legislators, children under ten years of age are not included in this event. Name badges will be issued and placed on each display table. Along with your students, an adult participant must remain at the display the entire time in order to visit with legislators. Out of respect for our officials, we observe the historic dress protocols the legislators have set for themselves. Appropriate dress for both adults and students who are participants is business attire. Congressional Award medalists will be wearing their medals. For questions: contact Debi.
SCHEDULE: Display set up begins at 10:30 a.m. Breakdown takes place at 1:30 p.m. Music will be permitted during the lunch hour from 12-1 pm.
Limited metered parking requires quarters. The Capitol Garage at 201 North Capitol Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46225 is the nearest pay garage and may be entered from Ohio Street just next to the Indiana Department of Education.
Music Application Deadline January 1, 2013 (There is no piano at the State House; all instruments would need to be provided by the family.)
Display Application Deadline January 30, 2013
