Q:

How is a 617 school different from homeschooling through the county?

A:

There are two main differences between enrolling in a 617 school and independently homeschooling under the school board in your county.  The first difference is that in a 617 school, a child's transcripts are maintained according to state standards, validating the credits earned.  A parent who independently homeschools maintains their child's transcript.  It has been found that often a child desiring enrollment in a traditional school after a period of homeschooling whose parent completes the transcript independently will have to be tested in order to verify placement, whereas a transcript from a 617 school is sufficient without further testing. The second difference is that a student graduating from a 617 school earns a high school diploma whereas a student who was independently homeschooled must take the GED for graduation verification.

Q:

Accreditation: Is Olivet accredited?

A:

No, Olivet is not accredited. This has not been a problem for the majority of our students and graduates. Our graduates who have applied and been accepted to two and four year colleges and universities have had their diploma from Olivet accepted without additional requirements. Tech schools and culinary institutions are the entities that have required accreditation.

Olivet graduates have been accepted to all of Florida's state colleges and universities, University of Miami, Southeastern College, Palm Beach Atlantic University, Florida Institute of Technology, Pensacola Christian College, Warner Southern College,  Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, Arizona State University, Moody Bible Institute, Harvard University, and College of the Ozarks. These are just some of the higher institutions that have accepted Olivet's diploma.

The Olivet administrative staff continuously strives to stay abreast of the college requirements for our students in order to assist them in an easy transition to the higher education.

Q:

Curriculum: Does Olivet tell me what curriculum to use for my child?

A:

No. Olivet allows you to choose the curriculum that you feel is appropriate for your child. All curriculums must be grade appropriate. This allows you the freedom to meet the needs unique for your child, as well as for your teaching style.

If recommendations are desired, you may contact your family advisor or the school librarian for suggestions.

Q:

Enrollment: What is the minimum age for enrollment in Olivet?

A:

A child must have turned 5 years old by September 1st of the current school year to enroll in Kindergarten. A child must have turned 6 years old by September 1st of the current school year to enroll in 1st grade.

Q:

Enrollment: Do you accept children with special needs/disabilities into your program?

A:

Olivet accepts students with special needs/disabilities into the school. However, each student accepted into Olivet, regardless of whether they have special needs/disabilities or not, must go through the interview process along with their parents.

We believe that students with special needs/disabilities benefit from an integrated classroom, where they can interact and socialize with peers. The important thing to know regarding students with special needs/disabilities is that Olivet is not set up to assist these students in any way outside of the Standing Rules and other written procedures that all enrolled students are under.

When participating in Olivet classes, these guidelines that must be followed in order for all students to experience success:

  1. Students with special needs/disabilities should have an assistant or aide present (this can be a parent).
  2. Each student’s placement will be evaluated by the teacher and/or administrator.
  3. The class should be appropriate for the student’s learning goals.

Teachers have the right to deny a student in their class if the following occur:

  1. The child with special needs/disabilities requires so much attention from the teacher that the other students in the class do not get the attention they need to learn the material, and/or
  2. The child with special needs/disabilities has disruptive behavior that negatively impacts the learning of the other students in the class, and/or
  3. The child with special needs/disabilities requires curriculum modifications that change the material in such a way that it does not resemble the material taught to the class.

Olivet does not accept any government funding for a student, regardless of what the student may qualify for from the government (or any entity). Academic requirements stand the same for each enrolled student, with no consideration of changing or lessening an expectation due to a student's special needs/disability.

There are three diplomas available that enrolled students may earn. If a student is not able to achieve the requirements for an Olivet diploma, they may be awarded a high school certificate. It is understood that the high school certificate will not be accepted by a school of higher learning, nor will it be considered as a high school diploma from any entity that requires a diploma for employment.

Any additional expenses that may be incurred in order for the student to meet Olivet's requirements are the responsibility of the parents.

For further information, please contact the Olivet administrator, Christina Cunningham, at kaylory@hotmail.com.

Olivet is a school that is cooperatively run. The multitude of opportunities for your child, as well as the opportunities provided regarding the academic oversight of your child's school work, can only be provided by all parents of enrolled children sharing in the tasks at hand. Olivet's administrative staff are all homeschooling parents, too, so their available time to give in service to Olivet is limited.

Most classes are either free or have a minimal charge to cover expenses; however, there are times that classes have a more substantial charge. (These fees are nonrefundable.)
