FAQs

Q:

What does the law say about homeschooling in Louisiana?

A:

You can read the law here:

http://www.hslda.org/laws/analysis/Louisiana.pdf

There are basically two options for homeschooling in Louisiana.

1.  Private School Option:

With this option you will send a letter annually to the State Department of Education within the first 30 days of the school year.  You must include the number of students enrolled in your private school. (ie. your homeschool)  Also with this option, you are required to have 180 days of school.

2.  Home Study Option:

With this option you must file an application and a copy of the child's birth certificate with the State within 15 days of your start date.  You must renew annually with proof that your program is at least equivalent to the public school.  This can be done with copies of standardized tests, lists of books and materials, copies of student's work, or a complete outline of each subject taught.  This option also requires 180 days of school.

Q:

Where can I get more information about homeschooling?

A:

Two excellent sources of information for Christian homeschoolers are the Home School Legal Defense Association (HSLDA) and the Christian Home Educators Fellowship of Louisiana (CHEF of LA).  Other great sites are available on the internet; however, nothing can take the place of talking one-on-one to those of us who are "in the trenches". Come and see what NELCHA is all about! We'd love to help you as you begin your homeschooling journey.

Also, remember to check out our "helpful links" section on the left!
