Q:

How and when do I join CHESCO?

A:

Joining our awesome community of home educators couldn’t be easier!  Simply go to the “Request Membership” tab on the upper right corner of the home page, complete the online form, read and e-sign the policies, submit payment via PayPal or mail a check to the address given, and you are done. Your membership is submitted to the Board for verification. Expect to hear from a CHESCO representative soon!

When you join is up to you. If you are interested in participating in fall Enrichment, then you must register your membership before pre-enrollment in March. Early Bird registration of $15 begins March 21st or at the time of Enrichment pre-enrollment and runs until July 1st,  when membership bumps up to $20.

Q:

What does service to the group mean?

A:

All members of CHESCO must provide a service to the group (i.e., planning a Valentine's party, day at Lazer Zone, Mom's Night Out event, etc.) to fulfill their membership requirement.  Services must take time and planning on the organizer's part to receive credit.  For example planning to meet at the local pizza place would not count; planning to meet at the local pizza place and providing games, etc. after eating, would.

Q:

I joined mid-school year. Do I still have to complete a service to the group?

A:

Yes. Unless you signed up for the coming school year during the early bird registration beginning in March, then you have the opportunity and responsibility to provide a meaningful service to our community of families before June 30th.

Q:

How often do CHESCO families meet?

A:

Activities are scheduled as parents and/or students initiate, so there are few set activities. However, every month sees new opportunities for students of all ages. Please see the public page for a general idea of annual activities. The more active our families choose to be, the more opportunities for our children. Remember, you make CHESCO better!

Q:

What types of educational philosophies do CHESCO families practice?

A:

You will find the entire gamut of educational philosophies represented in our CHESCO members.  We have traditionalists, eclectic, classical, Charlotte Mason, and those who employ a happy combination.  No matter your educational preference and curriculum, you and your family will find a support network of like-minded families.

Q:

What are the benefits of joining CHESCO?

A:

Home educating is an incredible privilege and responsibility. As a parent you can expect encouragement from like-minded educators, veteran educators, and simply parents in the trenches. A functional support network provides a priceless reinforcement to your commitment to educate your child(ren). Serving the community builds community, and our children need healthy community to grow into healthy adults. Our children enjoy the benefits of friends, other parents investing in his/her education and a plethora of experiences that larger numbers make possible.

Q:

Tell me more about Enrichment opportunities.

A:

If you are considering joining CHESCO, then don’t miss out on Enrichment! Meeting in a local church, we give our children the benefit of a variety of classes that would be difficult for a home educating parent to provide to a smaller number of students. Two class periods are offered every Friday morning for 8 weeks in the fall of each year. The classes are whatever the parents decide to teach; we’ve had everything from current events and folding paper airplanes to biology dissection labs and public speaking. Sign up for pre-enrollment is generally in March with enrollment completed in May. Class size is limited by the number of teachers and classes available.

Q:

How does CHESCO participate in the larger community of Ardmore and southern Oklahoma?

A:

Currently, we have an active Generation Joshua (GenJ) group initiated and led by middle and high school students and an Acts 20:35 service group led by parents and students. Opportunities abound for parents to use CHESCO as a platform to serve our larger community!

Q:

How long has CHESCO been functioning?

A:

Many years ago area homeschoolers met informally to encourage each other and provide additional learning opportunities for their children. More recently, CHESCO formally organized about five years ago to handle a larger number of home educators and share the load of activities more evenly. The Policy Manual and By-Laws are in effect for the benefit and protection of CHESCO members, giving freedom to enjoy the benefits of membership without overly burdening any members.

Q:

What’s SO-HE?

A:

SO-HE is a Yahoo email group and stands for Southern Oklahoma Home Educators.  Many home educators send emails to SO-HE to get feedback from other homeschoolers, post an item or curriculum for sale, etc.  To join, go to www.groups.yahoo.com, type “CHESCO” in the Find a Yahoo Group box, click “SO-HE” group, click the “Join this Group” button and then follow the instructions.  SO-HE is an outreach email group and membership in CHESCO is not required.

Q:

Does CHESCO have a mailing address?

A:

Yes, CHESCO has a mail box rented.  See address below.  Please keep in mind that the fastest (and preferred) way to get a response is to contact CHESCO via email.
