FIRST Robotics Team
2019-2020 Rogue Robots Team
Do you have students that are interested in mechanics, electronics, programming, organization, fundraising, or all of the above? Then you should consider having your student join the FIRST Robotics team of CHEMinistry. We are the Rogue Robots team and we are starting our sixth year.
We meet at the Carpenter Robotics Center (parking lot is off of Hines St). For the fall, we'll be meeting about once a month. These meetings will introduce the students to our tools and our safety guidelines. On January 4th, we'll receive the official Challenge and then we'll start to build our robot. We build on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights and on Saturdays during the day. You won’t need to be there every build day so don’t feel intimidated by the schedule. We have until Feb 18th to build a working robot. It will be an intense 6 weeks but as the FIRST organization says, "It will be the hardest fun you've ever had." Once building is finished, we’ll compete in two weekend tournaments.
We need students (9-12th) and mentors alike! If you have students that are in 7th and 8th grade who are interested, they can help build the robot and cheer the team on in the competitions in March and April but cannot be on the competition floor driving the robot. And parents, if you have expertise in the mechanical, electrical, or fundraising areas, we could use your help as well.
So if you have a mechanically minded teen, this is the team for you. We will be programming our robot in Java this year so if you have a budding computer programmer, this might be a great fit for your student. In addition to getting some great experience in programming, designing, and building a working robot, there are also scholarships to college that are available through the FIRST Robotics organization. Plus it looks great on a high school transcript!
Full student team member: $200
Additional student team members from same family: $100
Auxiliary members: $50 (for students interested in smaller parts of the project like publicity, artwork for the robot/team members, being a team mascot for the competition)
7th and 8th graders: $50
If you are having financial difficulties, let us know and we can talk to you about scholarships available for students.
Our first meeting is September 12th from 6:30 pm until 7:45 pm at the Carpenter Robotics Center. Come and find out more about our team, see our robot from last year in action, eat great snacks, and see if this program is for you! Call Karen Lehman at 689-6556 if you have any questions or email firstname.lastname@example.org .
Build Class 2019
Do you have a student interested in building machines? The Rogue Robots team is presenting a fun class to interest and challenge your student and to generate the engineering interest in your child. Your student would be paired with one of the Robotics team members and will be making rubber band cannons. Once we are finished building, we’ll be seeing which cannon operator is the most accurate. We will demonstrate our robot so that the students can see what can result from an interest in building and design. And of course, we'll have some fun snacks for the kids.
So if you have a student aged 10 to 12 years old, please consider this free class. Class size will be limited to 12. This class takes place on October 24th from 3:00 pm - 5:00 pm at the Carpenter Robotics Center. Sign up will be open in September.
We had some great sponsors in the 2019 Season - Dow Chemical, Dow Corning, Nexteer, Awaken Leadership and FIRST of the Great Lakes Bay Region all gave the team grants. Midland Steel and Prime Fasteners gave us in-kind donations. Sanford Hardware and Ace Hardware gave us discounts on all materials and tools bought for the robot. Thank you!!
