2019 CHSA Volleyball Information Letter

Dear Families,

Thank you for your interest in CHSA Volleyball!

CHSA is a volunteer run organization that seeks to support families in training homeschool students to successfully participate in a competitive athletic environment.


We seek to honor Christ in our attitudes and efforts both on and off the court. All games and practices will have a time of prayer, and all teams will have a time for devotions.


Please understand that CHSA is a competitive program. If your child makes a team, no play time is guaranteed. If you have any questions regarding this policy, please discuss with the VP of Volleyball, Sara Elsner.


Camp: CHSA will host a volleyball camp May 13 – 16th (Monday – Thursday) run by our head Varsity Coach Phillip Powell, JV Coach Bailey Graves, and JH and Assistant Varsity Coach Abigail Rodriguez. This is an excellent opportunity for players to work on skills prior to the season. However, attending camp is not a commitment to play on a team. All players are welcome. For those interested in trying out for one of CHSA’s teams, tryouts for junior high and high school students will be held on the last day of camp. Camp attendance does not require competitive team tryout, nor does it guarantee team placement. Location: South Main Baptist Church in Pasadena. Camp TimesAge 7 - JH 1-3pm AND HS 3-5pm. Parents must fill out a registration sheet and a medical release form before the player is allowed on the court. Parents are also welcome to stay and watch! Cost: $100 and $90 for each additional sibling.


Developmental Program: (Minimum age: 7) CHSA’s Developmental program is a skills clinic that focuses on the basics of volleyball and is designed for elementary and JH players who are new to the game. There are NO competitions at this level, and tryouts are not necessary. Coached by our Varsity players, the developmental program will meet twice a week for five weeks.

Dates & Times (Please note change in schedule from previous years.):

Tuesdays & Thursdays, July 9th – August 8th from 12:30-2pm*.

Most practices will be at South Main Baptist Church (4300 East Sam Houston Pkwy S, Pasadena, 77505). However, when SMBC has a conflict, we will practice at Hope Lutheran Church (1804 S. Friendswood Dr., Friendswood, 77546). Specific practice location information will be sent out at a later date.

Jr. High & High School Competitive Volleyball Teams: Tryouts are required for girls interested in playing on a Jr. High or High School volleyball team. These teams are competitive, and there is no guarantee that all girls who tryout will make a team. Last year, we had one Jr. High team, one JV team, and one Varsity team. However, the number of teams may vary from year to year depending on the number of girls who tryout and the number of coaches who are available. Teams will be announced by the end of May. Cost: Uniform (approx. $70-$100) and registration fees (Please see below) due at the parent/player meeting.

Parent/Player Meeting: A parent/player meeting is scheduled for 6:30pm at Grace Church at 14505 Gulf Freeway, Houston, TX 77034 in Room 102 and 103 on the north side of the building at the gravel parking lot. This is a very important meeting for both the parent and player to attendIn addition to discussing the season, paperwork will be turned in, registration fees will be collected, and uniforms will be ordered. A $50 late registration fee will be assessed to anyone who requires a make-up meeting.

In order for CHSA to be successful, it is imperative that parents volunteer in some capacity during the season. Volunteer options will be discussed at the parent/player meeting, and parents will be asked to choose an area in which they will be willing to serve.



Registration fees for the 2019 volleyball season:

$500 for Varsity and Junior Varsity

$300 for Junior High

$150 for Developmental


Uniforms- Approximate cost: $70-$100


Fundraising: In order to keep our fees to a minimum, fundraising is a required part of our program. Each player/family is expected to participate in one car wash and sell 5 presold tickets for the car wash in the summer and participate in the Butter Braids fundraiser in the fall. Depending on our budget, other fundraisers may be required. Families who do not want to participate in the fundraisers may choose a buy-out option during the registration process @ the parent/player meeting. For each fundraiser that the player/family does not participate in the cost will be $100.


Other Expenses:

All tournament and gym fees are covered by your CHSA registration, but additional expenses are incurred by travel. There are two out of town tournaments for our high school teams in October. JV and Varsity will go to a state/regional tournament in Dallas requiring a 2-3 night hotel stay. Also, all high school teams compete in a national tournament in Wichita, Kansas, where a 3-4 night hotel stay is necessary. Travel expenses, hotel, and meals are the responsibility of each family. Additionally, admission fees to tournaments and matches are also charged to spectators. Tournament entry fees usually range from $10-$15 a person and gate fees at matches usually range from $3-$5 per person. This can get pricey for large families, so it’s important to know this from the start.



High School Practices will start in June 4th

No practices will be held on July 4th.

Aug. 13 - Oct. Practice Schedule: Tuesdays 5-8pm and Thursdays 2-5pm


Jr. High Practices will start in July 6th

July 9th– Aug. 8th Practice Schedule: Tuesdays 12:30-2:30 and Thursdays 12:30-2:30

Aug. 13 - Sept. Practice Schedule: Tuesdays 3:30-5:30pm and Thursdays 12:30-2:30pm
