Volleyball FAQs

Thank you for your interest in CHSA Volleyball for 2018.

CHSA is a volunteer-run organization that seeks to support families in training homeschool students to successfully participate in a competitive athletic environment.

We seek to honor Christ in our attitudes and efforts both on and off the court. All games and practices will have a time of prayer, and all teams will have a time for devotions during the year.

Please understand that CHSA is a competitive program. If your child makes a team, no playing time is guaranteed. If you have any questions regarding this policy, please discuss with Vanessa Darko, Volleyball VP.

Camp and Tryouts: CHSA volleyball camp is for homeschool girls that are interested in playing volleyball. This is an excellent opportunity for players to work on skills prior to the season. However, attending camp is not a commitment to play on a team. Tryouts for junior high and high school students who are interested in joining a team will be held on the Thursday, May 24th.

CHSA Volleyball Camp for 2018 will be May 21 – 24 (Monday – Thursday) at South Main Baptist Church in Pasadena. Girls age 7 – Completed 7th Grade will meet from 1–3 pm and Completed 8th Grade - 12th Grade will meet from 3–5 pm. Parents must fill out a registration form and a medical release form before their child is allowed on the court. Parents are also welcome to stay and watch!

Cost: $90  (Please make checks payable to CHSA) *No prorating.

**Also, please remember that only water is allowed in SMBC’s gym.

Try-Outs

Date: Thursday, May 24th
Location: South Main Baptist Church in Pasadena
Cost: $25 (fee is waived if you attend CHSA Volleyball Camp)

If you attended camp, no additional paperwork is needed. If you are not attending camp, please print both registration and medical release forms, fill them out, and bring with you to try-outs.

*No try-outs are necessary for elementary/JH age girls interested in the developmental program. Please contact Leigh Ann Whitman at lawhitman@sbcglobal.net with any questions.

Developmental Program:

This program is designed for girls that are just getting to know the game. There are NO competitions at this level, and tryouts are not necessary.

Coached by our Varsity players, the developmental program will meet twice a week for five weeks.

Developmental will practice on Tuesdays & Thursdays, July 3rd – August 2nd from 12:30-2pm.

August 7th and August 9th are scheduled as make-up practices, so if a player misses a practice during the 5-week session, she is welcome to come for a make-up lesson. If a player misses more than one practice, she is welcome to come to both make-up lessons.

Most practices will be at South Main Baptist Church (4300 East Sam Houston Pkwy S, Pasadena, TX 77505). However, when SMBC has a conflict, we will practice at another gym. Specific practice location information will be sent out at a later date.

Cost: $150 Registration by mail or at Volleyball Camp, May 21-24.

Please email Leigh Ann at lawhitman@sbcglobal.net if you are planning on signing up your daughter.

Contact lawhitman@sbcglobal.net for registration information.

Jr. High & High School Competitive Volleyball Teams: Tryouts are required for girls interested in playing on a Jr. High or High School volleyball team. These teams are competitive, and there is no guarantee that all girls who tryout will make a team. The number of teams may vary from year to year depending on the number of girls who tryout and the number of coaches who are available. If a player is unable to attend camp, a separate tryout will need to be scheduled. Teams will be announced by the end of May. Cost: Uniform (approx. $70) and registration fees (Please see below) due at the parent/player meeting.

GENERAL INFORMATION

Parent/Player Meeting: A parent/player meeting is scheduled for June 2nd at Bay Area Church, 4800 W Main St., League City, TX at 2pm. This is a very important meeting for both the parent and player to attend. In addition to discussing the season, paperwork will be filled out, registration fees will be collected, and uniforms will be ordered. This is a mandatory meeting, and both parent and player are required to attend together. A $50 late registration fee will be assessed to anyone who requires a make-up meeting.

In order for CHSA to be successful, it is imperative that parents volunteer in some capacity during the season. Volunteer options will be discussed at the parent/player meeting, and parents will be asked to choose an area in which they will be willing to serve.

Fees: The registration fees for volleyball are:
TBD
(for 2017 $450 for Varsity and Junior Varsity; $300 for Junior High)

Uniforms - Approximate cost: $70

Other ExpensesAll tournament and gym fees are covered by your CHSA registration, but additional expenses are incurred by travel. There are two out of town tournaments in October. JV and Varsity will go to a state/regional tournament in Dallas requiring a 2-3 night hotel stay. Also, all high school teams compete in a national tournament in Wichita, Kansas, where a 3-4 night hotel stay is necessary. Travel expenses, hotel, and meals are the responsibility of each family.
