Additional Information

On, Saturday, May 17th, renowned homeschool parent, curriculum expert, author, and speaker Cathy Duffy will be joining us for a whole day of workshops.  She homeschooled her three sons through high school graduation and is the author of three books: 101 Top Picks for Homeschool Curriculum, Christian Home Educators' Curriculum Manual, and Government Nannies: The Cradle-to-Grave Agenda of Goals 2000 and Outcome-Based Education.  Her workshops are being funded through dues collected throughout the year.  This is a huge benefit to our families and is the only date in 2014 during which she will be speaking on the east coast.  She will conduct two workshops in the morning with a break for lunch and two workshops in the afternoon.  The workshops will be held at the Base Theater on Joint Base Andrews and are open to Andrews and Fort Belvoir homeschool groups as well as civilian homeschoolers.  We are currently opening 200 spaces to non-JBABHE members.  As JBABHE members, there will be no entry fee - non-members will pay an entrance fee of $10 (spouses of attendees are free).  Please feel free to invite friends.  They may register and pay their workshop fee using PayPal.  We will be arranging base access for civilians for this event.  To facilitate this, it is important that civilians RSVP using the name on their driver's license.

We are holding 100 seats for JBABHE members, but RSVP is required.  Any of these seats left unreserved will be released to the public on May 1.  Please do not delay in signing up.

Child care will not be provided.  If possible, please make arrangements for child care.  We would like to have as many seats available as possible for parents to attend the workshops.  Thank you.

We are aware that the Teach Them Diligently conference is also being conducted over the same weekend; however, this is a free option for members and a nice alternative for those who cannot or do not want to pay the conference and parking fees.

Please contact me with any questions.

Thank you,

Workshop #1: Checking Your Homeschool Vision at the Reality Door (9-10 am)

Both new and experienced homeschoolers struggle with many unrealistic expectations that cause unnecessary pressure, strife between family members, and feelings of inadequacy and failure. Cathy shares from her experience about seven challenging areas where we may need an attitude adjustment to be more realistic in our approaches and expectations so that homeschooling can be a successful and rewarding experience.

Workshop #2: Classical Education, Unit Study, Charlotte Mason, Unschooling? What approach should I use? (10:15-11:15 am)

Confused by all the different approaches for home education. Wondering why “classical education” programs look drastically different from one another? Cathy Duffy helps you understand the unique features of each approach and how they might work best in different situations. She also provides examples of publishers and products that are representative of each approach.

Workshop #3: Learning Styles: Choosing and Using Curriculum to Fit Each Child (12:45-1:50 pm)

Having problems with uncooperative learners? Do you feel like your curriculum is as much hindrance as help? What about all those publishers who claim to have the best curriculum? How do you sort through all of this to figure out what will really be best for each of your children? Understanding learning styles helps you overcome many of the problems you encounter in homeschooling. In this session you’ll first identify your own learning styles and those of your children. Then Cathy will discuss methods of teaching to your children’s strengths and overcoming weaknesses using examples from popular math programs.

Workshop #4: "Give Me Liberty or Give Me Death:” The Critical Role of Home Education for Our Country’s Future (2-3 pm)

Did you know that social control was the primary purpose for creating government schools in the U.S.? Cathy traces the history of education up through “No Child Left Behind” and the Common Core State Standards Initiative to demonstrate the challenge government-controlled education poses. She also explains why homeschooling is critical for the futures of both our families and the larger society.
