CHEC FAQs

Q:

What is Crossroads Home Educated Children (CHEC, Inc.)?

A:

CHEC is a non-profit incorporated Christian Homeschool Support organization comprised of families who homeschool in and around Victoria, Texas.

CHEC began with a small group of homeschool families in the 1980's, and currently has a membership of about 100 families.  CHEC maintains a website for communication between members, hosts events throughout the year (provided there is interest and volunteers are available), and CHEC students produce an annual yearbook.  CHEC has a board of officers who are elected annually, and serve CHEC in a volunteer capacity.  CHEC members pay annual membership dues, which support the CHEC website for communication, and enable CHEC to host homeschool friendly events at public venues in Victoria, Texas.

Please note that CHEC is not a school, and is not affiliated with any school, or learning cooperative.  CHEC does not offer classes for children or adults on a regular basis, and does not provide a record keeping service (report cards, transcripts, diplomas).  CHEC does not maintain a brick and mortar office, or a lending library, and has no paid staff.  CHEC is not affiliated with any particular denomination, place or worship, or political party.

CHEC is an organization that helps members support each other in their unique homeschool journeys.  Join us on the home education adventure!

Q:

I am considering home education for my family.  Is there someone from CHEC who can call, e-mail, text, or meet me in person for a consultation to answer all my questions about homeschooling?

A:

No - CHEC is a support group for families in the Victoria, Texas area, who have already made the decision to homeschool.

CHEC has no paid employees – everyone who serves the organization in any capacity does so as a volunteer.  All CHEC volunteers homeschool their own children, which keeps us all very busy, indeed!   Because we have made the commitment to the education of our own children, we have no volunteers with the time required to field all questions about homeschooling.

Please note that CHEC is not a school, does not maintain a brick and mortar office, does not have a lending library, and does not provide a record keeping service (report cards, transcripts, diplomas, etc.).

If you are seriously considering homeschooling, CHEC recommends that you begin your research by taking the time to carefully look over two websites, which contain a wealth of information:

  1.  The Home School Legal Defense Association website, HSLDA at  www.hslda.org, and
  2. The Texas Home School Coalition website, THSC at http://www.thsc.org/.

These websites will answer most of the initial questions you have about homeschooling.  Once you have made the decision to homeschool and begin doing so, we encourage you to join CHEC!  CHEC began in the 1980’s with a handful of families who chose home education, and at this writing has about 100 member families.  CHEC membership is currently $30, and gives you access to communication with both new and experienced homeschool families.  CHEC maintains a website for members to share information with each other, and offers events periodically (provided there is interest, and there are volunteers available) for homeschool families.

We sincerely hope you will choose home education, and would be glad to have your family as members of CHEC once you do.  May God bless you on your homeschool journey!

Q:

What is the cost of CHEC membership and how do I pay?

A:

$30 per family, payable on this website (via PayPal).

A full year's membership begins June 1st, and terminates the last day of July of the following calendar year.  Membership applications and payments are accepted at any time during the year, but all memberships expire at the end of July, unless renewed.  CHEC memberships are not pro-rated, and are non-refundable and non-transferable.  Both new and renewing CHEC membership dues are collected electronically, on this website.  All applications are submitted on this website.  Please note that CHEC no longer accepts payments made by mail.

Q:

Does CHEC offer free trial memberships?  I'd like to see if CHEC is a good fit for my family at no cost.

A:

No - CHEC does not offer free trial memberships.

The CHEC Board believes that the cost of an annual membership, at less than $3 a month is a good value, and affordable for most families.  Please know that the Board evaluates all expenditures regularly, and strives to be good stewards of CHEC's funds.  CHEC has expenses, and must meet those financial obligations.  Membership dues are the main source of CHEC revenue.

Q:

Where does the $30 CHEC membership fee go, and what does it pay for?

A:

Your $30 payment goes towards payment for this website service, domain name & email server, PayPal fees, U.S. Post Office Box, and CHEC Events.

All payments are deposited into the CHEC operating account. Two CHEC officers have signature authorization, and the CHEC treasurer provides a detailed accounting report periodically to the board.  Expenses not listed above are subject to approval by the current board of directors.  Please note that CHEC has no paid staff & depends upon volunteers, and CHEC does not maintain an office.  If you have specific questions about CHEC finances, please do not hesitate to contact the CHEC treasurer: treasurer@checin.org.

Q:

Once my family joins CHEC, will I be expected to volunteer for CHEC?

A:

Yes - Because CHEC operates without any paid employees, you will need to volunteer in some capacity.

For example, you may need to help organize, and/or set up for, and/or clean up after any CHEC events that you and your family attend.  You should also know that you may be asked to serve as a CHEC Officer.  CHEC Bylaws require that a Board of Officers (President, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and Member-at-Large) be in place to handle the business of the organization.  Volunteers are also needed to monitor CHEC e-mail, and maintain the CHEC website.  CHEC is run entirely by volunteers, so plan now for a way that you can serve the homeschool community.  Many hands make light work, and your assistance is both needed and appreciated!

Q:

My homeschool family hasn't joined CHEC yet.  Can we still attend CHEC events?

A:

Most CHEC events are open to all homeschool families, and we especially welcome those new to the homeschool community!

However, CHEC depends on financial support from member dues to finance this website for communication, and pay for other CHEC expenses.  Additionally, CHEC provides a "Love Gift" (monetary donation) to those generous local churches that host CHEC events.  These Love Gifts come from membership dues.  We hope you will join CHEC to help us sponsor these events.  If you do not wish to commit to CHEC membership, please know that we frequently ask for a small cash donation from non-CHEC member families who attend CHEC events.  If you are not a CHEC member, and wish to register for a CHEC event, you may ask a homeschool friend who is a member of CHEC to sign you up, or send e-mail to checmail@checin.org.

Q:

Does CHEC sell advertising space on it's website?  I am not eligible to become a CHEC member (I do not homeschool in the state of Texas), but I would like to communicate information about my business, services, or event to all CHEC members.

A:

No - Crossroads Home Educated Children (CHEC, Inc.) is a non-profit organization, and does not sell advertising space on the CHEC website.

However, businesses are always welcome to make a monetary, or in kind donation to CHEC.  Please contact treasurer@checin.org for more information.  If you want to try to get information to all CHEC member families about your business, services, or events, send a brief e-mail to checmail@checin.org.  You will need to include contact information, and a website address if applicable.  Please do not mail memos, flyers or promotional materials to the CHEC post office box - as we will not be able to distribute this information to CHEC members.  Please note that E-mail sent to the CHEC e-mail moderator may or may not be distributed to members.  E-mail about your business, service, or event is subject to approval for distribution, due to the fact that we limit the number of e-mail "blasts" we send to CHEC members.  If you wish to purchase printed advertising space in the CHEC student produced annual Yearbook, please contact the CHEC Yearbook adviser at: yearbook@checin.org.  CHEC members are always welcome to put information regarding their businesses under the CHEC Classifieds section of the CHEC website.

Q:

Does CHEC sponsor a Homecoming Dance, a Homeschool Prom, or a Homeschool Graduation Ceremony?

A:

No. CHEC does not sponsor these events.  The Victoria Cobra Athletics Homeschool Team Sports group organizes their Homeschool Homecoming Dance and Sports Banquet.  Graduating High School Seniors and their parents in the homeschool community traditionally get together to plan a Homeschool Graduation Ceremony, held in Victoria, at a church.  Additionally, a group of Graduating High School Seniors and their parents in the homeschool community form a Prom committee to host an annual Prom for High School students.  Each year, homeschool parents from the community volunteer to lead these committees.  CHEC will post information about these events as it is made available, and will share contact information for the committee chairs.

Q:

Does CHEC do anything special each year for Graduating High School Seniors who are CHEC members?

A:

Yes.  The CHEC student produced Yearbook offers CHEC Graduating Seniors an opportunity to have a whole page in the Yearbook dedicated to each Senior.  The page has a value of $200, and can include several photos, or one large photo, bible verses or favorite quotes, and should reflect the personality of the Graduating Senior.  For more information about Senior Yearbook Pages, please contact the CHEC Yearbook Advisor at yearbook@checin.org.
