All About WHEAT

Q:

Tell me about WHEAT. Who are you and what are you all about?

A:

We Home Educate and Train ("WHEAT") began in the early 1990's as a loose-knit group of about a dozen families who desired fellowship and encouragement in their homeschooling efforts. The mission of WHEAT remains the same today: to share information, provide support for homeschooling families and those interested in homeschooling, and to enrich those families spiritually, academically, and socially. We are a local support group, not a co-op, but we offer many opportunities for fellowship and enrichent!

Q:

Do you offer co-ops and classes?

A:

WHEAT is primarily a homeschool support group; we do not host an official co-op. However, we share a wealth of information about clubs, co-ops, and other enrichment opportunities offered both throughout the community that some of our families are often involved in. Our families are encouraged to offer and participate in these opportunities!

Q:

If you don't have an official co-op or classes, how will I get to know the WHEAT family?

A:

We are a friendly bunch! Our annual school year kick-off picnic is a great way to meet veteran and new WHEAT families. Becoming involved in clubs and activities that WHEAT promotes is a good chance to meet others.  Recently, we've offered:

  • Regular fellowship events for moms called "Heart to Heart"
  • A  winter talent show that is fun for the whole family.
  • Field trips throughout the local and regional area
  • Teen game nights (ages 12 and up)
  • Field day for all ages in May
  • A one-day local Moms' retreat- a day for homeschool moms only to relax and be encouraged and renewed
  • Stay abreast of what's happening through the newsletter and this website's member forum and join in the activities!
  • Park days and playdates for younger kids
  • An online member forum through our website
  • A periodical digital newsletter highlighting group activities and area homeschool days and opportunities.

Q:

What is expected of me once I join?

A:

As with any pursuit, the more you invest in a group the more rewarding the experience and the richer the relationships will be. We highly encourage each member to support at least one WHEAT event each year, or take on a leadership position. Supporting events can be as low-key as volunteering for set-up or clean-up; hostessing or coordinating a mom's fellowship activity, or perhaps joining the leadership team. We welcome member article submissions to our newsletter (parents and students). Many hands make light work!
