Introduction to Animation

Grade/Age: 10 y/o–19 y/o
Dates: Jan 12, 2024 – May 10, 2024—Fri
Period: 10:35 AM - 11:50 AM, 2nd Period
Location: Planet Homeschool
Instructor: Mike Zugschwert

Description:

An iPad running the RoughAnimator app (with a drawing of a cat's face) surrounded by a pen, colored pencils, paper, pencil sharpener, and a drawing tablet.Students will be introduced to different types of animation. Hand-drawn 2D animation in flipbooks, digital 2D animation using a tablet, and stop motion animation using anything at all. We will also cover a bit of 3D animation, although hardware requirements may restrict it to demos rather than student exercises. Through a combination of theory and practical exercises, students will learn the basic principles of animation, including timing, spacing, squash and stretch, and keyframes. Throughout the class, we will also briefly cover the history of animation and talk about how it has evolved with technology.

An iPad, tablet, or Chromebook with a touch screen is recommended. A few devices will be available for use but having your own will allow you to spend more time animating rather than sharing devices with other students. You can animate with a finger, but having a stylus helps a lot. You can also use a laptop if you have a drawing tablet. We will be using RoughAnimator and StopMotionStudio, each is around $6.
