Game Club

• ages 10–19 years

Get those dice-throwing arms ready! Games are always more fun when played with others, so bring your favorite games from home and join your fellow students for battles of strategy and wits, or games of collaboration and cooperation.

Games of all kinds are welcome, including board games, card games, RPGs, and even video games.

This club is for gamers of all levels and skills, to share their favorite games and discover new ones. Those with more experience will help you learn, and learn from you about your favorites.

Art Club

An afternoon of self-expression and artistic exploration!

Find your voice, explore new artistic mediums, experiment with different styles, expand your portfolio, question everything, develop your techniques, collaborate with other artists, and solve problems as you create and interact with art and a supportive group of fellow artists.

Artists should bring their own art supplies.

This club is for artists of all levels and skills.

Coding Club

• ages 10–19 years

A space for hobbyist and semiprofessional programmers to collaborate on club projects, assist each other through problems, and share progress on their personal projects.

This is not a place to learn to program but a mutually supportive co-working space for programming in the company of others.

Freestyle Drone Club

• ages 10–19 years

It’s robotics-meets-Pinewood Derby-meets-Star-Wars with freestyle drone flying!

Gain a hands-on understanding of the engineering behind this sensational new way to fly. Not only will you learn all the STEM subjects (mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, aerospace engineering, video engineering, open source, math, physics, battery science, MacGyvering, and more) but if you can fly these little micro drones you can fly any drone, opening up a growing world of drone-related professions.

This is a cooperative exploration of drones led by parents and guardians. We’ll work together to learn how to build and fly our drones. Parents, guardians, and caregivers of enrolled students will serve as volunteer room monitors or fellow pilots to ensure there are three adults on site every week. They do not need to have any experience with or knowledge of drones.

While there is no tuition, students will need to supply their own drones and equipment:

• a tiny whoop drone such as NewBeeDrone AcroBee65 V3 BNF Tiny Whoop (~$140)

• a transmitter such as the RadioMaster T8 Lite V2 Multi-Protocol D8 2.4GHz RC Transmitter (~$40) or the RadioMaster Zorro Radio Controller – CC2500 (~$100)

• an FPV headset such as the FatShark Scout (~$170)

New pilots should also invest in the VelociDrone FPV Racing Simulator app with the Micro Class Quads add-on (~$30) and plan to spend the first few weeks learning to control a drone in the simulator before flying IRL (in-real-life).

Adult-in-the-Room

Parents, guardians, and caregivers of enrolled students will serve as volunteer room monitors or fellow artists, coders, or gamers to ensure there are at least three adults on site every week. A schedule will be established shortly before the first PHS Clubs gathering — and you’ll be able to trade shifts if the ones assigned to you don’t work out.

• Adults do not need to serve as mentors — although they may if they have the expertise and inclination.

Parents, guardians, and caregivers may also be participants and join in the fun of gaming, enjoy the benefits of a coding coworking space, express themselves through artistic exploration, or explore the science and art of small drones.

Mutual Respect

It’s easy to get boisterous when having fun, so PHS Clubs participants should be mindful of each Club’s focus, their fellow students (and their belongings), the shared classroom space, and the other classes in session. If in doubt, please defer to the Onsite Volunteers.

Mix-and-Match

All participants must sign up for one of the PHS Clubs for insurance and safety reasons, all four PHS Clubs are open to visits from other clubs’ participants.

If a student isn’t in the mood for coding and prefers to game, draw, or fly drones on any given day, as long as our onsite volunteers have an accurate list of who is in the building.

Cleanup

All PHS Club participants are expected to help clean up the classrooms and common areas of the co-op at the end of the gathering. When everyone pitches in cleanup can be completed in about 15 minutes.

Everyone should plan to stay until cleanup is completed. Participants will wipe down surfaces (tabletops, countertops, chairs, doorknobs), put away folding tables and chairs, wash whiteboards, vacuum carpets, sweep floors, remove scuff marks, return each room to the church’s preferred setup, return PHS supplies to our closet, empty trash and recycling containers, close and latch windows, lower blinds, and turn off the lights. There is a detailed cleanup guide online and every room has a checklist and cleanup kit.

When everyone works together, cleanup can usually be completed in 15 minutes. If we have tracked in a considerable amount of mud or melted snow, we will need to mop and that can take can a half hour or more — so avoid tracking in mud and snow.

Extended Play

Gamers, artists, and coders may stay and play, create, or code through the fifth period (3:15 PM–4:30 PM) — with adult supervision and the permission of their parents, guardians, or caregivers — provided (1) they take a short break at 3:05 PM to help with cleanup of our co-op’s other classrooms and shared spaces and (2) they have a solid plan for ensuring that their space is cleaned up by 4:45 PM. (The Fellowship Hall is NOT available for extending the Freestyle Drone Club.)

PHS Clubs are only open to PHS members.

Co-op membership is $45 per semester per family and covers the cost of rent, insurance, this website, office and cleaning supplies, etc.

There are no tuition or supplies fees to participate in the PHS Clubs.

Late enrollment

All Spring PHS Clubs are open to new registrations from Spring 2023 co-op members through the end of the Spring semester. However, because our co-op’s membership fee is largely based on per-family costs for which Planet Homeschool receives no pro rata adjustments, we cannot offer a Membership Fee discount to those who join later in the semester.

Co-op Location

Planet Homeschool meets at 2708 33rd Ave NE, Saint Anthony Village, MN 55418. Saint Anthony Village (SAV) is a small first-ring suburb surrounded by northeast Minneapolis, Roseville, New Brighton, and Columbia Heights. There is a large parking lot, a bike rack, and Metro Transit Route 25 stops at the corner of 33rd Ave and Belden Dr.

COVID-19

Planet Homeschool’s approach to COVID-19 is cautious, science-minded, and informed by the needs of our most vulnerable members. We are making every effort to ensure that our in-person courses are safe and accessible. When we are indoors together, those efforts include vaccination, masking, and air filtration.

PHS Clubs may choose to gather outside when the weather permits, either making use of the picnic tables or lounging on the lawn.
