Math Enrichment, Problem Solving and STEM 101/102

Math Enrichment, Problem Solving, STEM in Grades 2-3

**This class is not recommended for 2nd graders who are below grade level in math. This class would be ok for a 4th grader who is working below grade level in math.**

Math 101 Pre-Requisites

-Must be working at a 2nd or 3rd grade math level at the time of taking the class.  At a minimum they should know.

  • Be able to understand the basic meaning of addition and subtraction
  • be working on automatic recall of addition and subtraction facts
  • write and say numbers through the hundreds place

-Able to consistently demonstrate positive classroom behaviors such as listening while the teacher is speaking, following teacher directions, raising hand to share an idea during a lesson or discussion, being respectful of classroom materials, and showing on-task behavior during learning activities

-Each class often begins with with a math word problem, so reading is involved in some of our activities; however, if a child struggles with reading, accommodations can be made such as the teacher or a classmate reading those types of math problems to the student

-Much of this class is cooperative based and involves working with a partner or small group of students on math games and math problem solving activities, so it is imperative that students taking this class get along well with peers and are comfortable and able to work cooperatively.

In this class, students will participate in activities and games that are not only fun and motivating, but reinforce mathematical skills and problem solving abilities in grades 2-3. Activities will encompass a variety of math topics throughout the semester (and year) to help supplement your child's math learning such as place value, addition and subtraction facts, fraction identification and comparison, patterns, money, telling time, measurement, shapes and geometry, and data collection and graphing. Emphasis will also be placed on developing number sense, mental mathematics abilities, and thinking skills.  We will incorporate 2-3 STEM activities in this class a semester.
