Intro. to Latin Language, History, and Culture

Salvete Omnes!  Enter the world of Ancient Rome!  In this class, we will learn the basics of the Latin language in the context of the first century A.D.  The curriculum will balance interactive vocabulary and grammar lessons with fun art and culture projects.  No prior knowledge of Latin is necessary.  Topics will include: daily life in ancient Pompeii, Roman art and archaeology, cuisine, and entertainment.  Learning Latin also helps to build a student's knowledge of English vocabulary, grammar, and spelling.  Your child will start to see Latin derivatives everywhere!  No prior knowledge of Latin is necessary!

Materials Needed:

We will be using the Cambridge Latin Course.  You will be required to purchase the Unit 1 Textbook (preferably 4th edition) and the Unit 1 Omnibus Workbook.  The textbook costs around $30 new, but you can find a used textbook in good condition for less on Amazon or Barnes & Noble.  We will cover approximately the first half of this textbook.  The second half of the book will be covered in the next level Latin class.  Both classes together will be equivalent to the LCPS Latin I course.

Homework:

Consist of 2-3 worksheets a week for the purpose of reviewing what we learned in class.  Short quizzes will be given to test students’ knowledge of vocabulary, basic grammar concepts, and cultural knowledge.
