ACT Prep (1st semester)

Description: Students will be required to take ACT practice tests at home each week (provided by teacher.) We will discuss test taking strategies for each area of the ACT test, with our primary focus on the Math section. Students are asked to bring their specific questions to class as well as share specific strategies that have helped them. Students are encouraged to sign up on the official ACT website (ACT | College and Career Readiness Solutions ) for other helpful information. 

 

Advanced Art

Description: This course will build on the knowledge gained from the studio drawing class offered last year. Using watercolor and acrylic, the students will explore realism, whimsy, abstract art, and mixed media. Each class will offer the skills needed to be successful, and the time needed to create. All materials used will be professional art grade. There will be some weeks that will have additional work at home.

 

American History – Senior High

Description: Exploring America is a full-year high school course that is comprehensive, giving students a survey of events and issues from European exploration to the war on terror, with extensive coverage of the twentieth century from a Christian perspective. Since there are 30 units of five lessons each, this class will be fast-paced and full of great information. Students will be expected to complete a unit each week. Parents can choose to add 12 works of American Literature to obtain an additional high school credit.

 

Apologetics (2nd semester)

Description: Through this semester long class, students will use critical thinking to engage in dialogue that will help them have a better understanding of their own Biblical worldview. Topics covered will included comparing the world’s five main religions, discovering the existence of God, challenge common questions by non-believers, learn how faith and science are connected and uncover his or her own uncertainties followed by its paired reasoning.  Objectives will be covered through instruction, class discussion, and hands-on learning. Students should expect weekly homework in order to participate during required in-class group discussions.

Description: Birds, Bugs, and Bats! So much of the love of God comes from exploring the things He has created. This course, designed for the younger student, will include simple experiments, copy work, and easy projects that we will do in class. Additional resources for continued study will be provided if students and parents want to use them, but there will be no required homework.

Description: “America’s Heritage is rich with explorers, inventors, pioneers, and soldiers - ordinary people whose choices made them excellent leaders and citizens. Journey with them through the founding, expansion, and modernization of Our American Heritage.” (From the text) This fun study of American history is geared for younger students using a hands-on, journal approach. Additional ideas for study will be provided for each chapter, but there will be no homework required.

Description: This class will work on how to construct a sentence. We will focus on the different parts of a sentence and how to make a complete sentence. We will also work on spelling and expanding our vocabulary. Students should expect a lot of practice writing sentences.

Description: This class introduces students to Biology, Chemistry and Physics by performing various experiments with basic items typically found in a kitchen pantry. We will be doing many fun labs that will provide a foundation for students to prepare them for higher level science classes, as well as lay a foundation for writing lab reports.

 

Elementary Writing

Description: In this class, students will work on improving their sentence structure, as well as improving their grammar, punctuation, vocabulary, and spelling skills.  We will go through the steps on how to write a proper paragraph. Then, we will group paragraphs into a report and/or essay by collecting and organizing facts about the U. S. national parks.

 

General Science

Required Materials: Student Text (Kindle version is optional) The Student Notebook ($36 at www.rainbowresource.com) is HIGHLY recommended but may be replaced with a 3-ring binder and graph paper. Calculator and various household items for completing experiments.

Description: Exploring Creation with General Science, 3rd edition, is designed to be the first course taken during junior high, it was created to give middle school students a basic understanding of the world that surrounds them each day of their lives so that they can appreciate the real-world relevance of scientific inquiry and the beauty of creation. 

This course covers a wide range of the branches of science while making the connections between each. Students will learn what science is and, in a detailed and engaging way, how to utilize proper scientific methods. This course has many hands-on science experiments that can be completed with household materials. The course is sandwiched by this historical information within the first module and a presentation of testimonies by modern-day scientists in the last module to help encourage students to study science to better know God and give him glory! 

Fourteen modules are spent exploring the History of Science and the Search for Truth, Science and Creation and Scientific Analysis. Modules of Earth Science include: Astronomy, Earth Science, Geology and Paleontology, Meteorology and Oceanography. General Chemistry and General Physics precede Life Science, Biology, Marine Science and Environmental Science. 

After demonstrating safe lab procedures in the classroom students will perform lab experiments at home and in the classroom. Students must keep up with reading and homework (4 to 6 hours a week) to fully comprehend the material and to be prepared for lectures, class discussions, experiments, and tests. Tests by Apologia will be provided. 

We will go through the text, averaging a Module, about 30 pages, every 2 weeks. Various assignments will include reading, answering questions, worksheets, lab reports and tests.

 

Introduction to American Sign Language

Description: Welcome! I'm very excited to work with your students learn American Sign Language. During classes, the students will learn the target language. ASL is a 3D language and it’s rather difficult to learn directly from a book or flat screen. That is why your student(s) will be using their binders at and then come each week to practice signing and understanding what they've learned at home. It is the student’s responsibility to practice at home the lessons learned in the classroom. Students will also be learning how to sign songs for the Winter and Spring Family Nights. 

Students will be able to introduce themselves and exchange information about themselves in ASL. They will be able to use signs from various lessons. Topics include: Greetings and Welcome, Class Rules, Fingerspelling, Numbers, Actions, Animals, At Play, At School, At Work/Occupations, Clothing, Colors & Shapes, Days & Time, Family & Friends, Feelings & Emotions, Food, Holidays & Celebrations, (signs for Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Valentine’s and Easter will be learned during each Holiday), Home, Opposites, Seasons, Weather, Transportation, Safety & Health, Spring with Plants and Outdoors, and Description Words. 

Activities included with learning the sign vocabulary will be games, coloring pages, puzzle pages and completing artwork. Google Classroom will not be set up for this class because the students will have handouts of the target vocabulary to be placed in a binder to practice at home. Students must always bring their binders to class. 

 

Jr. High Writing

Appropriate Grade Levels: 7-9

Description: Becoming a good writer takes practice as well as reading/studying a variety of writing styles. Packets each week with spelling/grammar/punctuation practice, definitions, editing practice, and various writing assignments. Our main objective in this class will be writing, although not all writing assignments will include both a rough and final draft. 

Students will be keeping a journal throughout the year – both assigned and free choice topics.

Students will be expected to type some of their assignments, especially final drafts, and submit via email.

 

Leadership & Entrepreneurship – Grades 9-12

Description: Through this year long class, student will learn leadership and entrepreneurship skills through a Biblical worldview. Topics covered will include leadership styles, communication styles, conflict resolution, accountability, delegation, goal setting and characteristics of leaders and entrepreneurs. Objectives will be covered through instruction, class discussion, scripture studies, and hands-on activities including an end of the year student-led business fair. This class will require outside homework to complete the student’s own interest-based business model for the end of the year fair.

 

Math Tutoring

Description:  These are tutoring/homework help sessions for Elementary Math, Pre-Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2, and Geometry students. It is not a math class. Students are expected to bring specific questions from their math curriculum. Please bring your own paper and pencil as well as your math assignments (including answer keys when possible). I will do my best to answer all questions and make suggestions of areas to review which will help students better understand their homework. Limit of 3 students per class period. I try to have the same math level together whenever possible. 

 

Physical Science

Supply Fee: $45 (for exam booklet and lab supplies in class) 

Description: With a greater emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics), the 3rd edition of Exploring Creation with Physical Science is an updated version that offers a greater focus on chemistry and physics compared to the previous editions. Starting with the basics of science, students are walked through the processes and branches of science. 1st or 2nd editions are not compatible with this class. 

Four modules are spent exploring the basics of chemistry, including properties and states of matter, atomic structure and the periodic table, chemical bonds, and reactions and energy. Six modules are dedicated to physics and include the study of motion, forces, energy, light, electricity, and magnetism. Students finish out their year learning about Earth science in five modules. 

After demonstrating safe lab procedures in the classroom students will perform lab experiments at home and in class. Students must keep up with reading and homework (4 to 6 hours a week) to fully comprehend the material and to be prepared for lectures, class discussions, experiments, and tests. Tests by Apologia will be provided.

Physics

A Student Notebook (1.5” or 2” 3-ring binder), 3-hole graph paper, pencils, and protractor. Calculator and various household items for completing experiments at home.

Description: This college-prep physics course is designed for the student who has completed algebra and has had an introduction to the definitions of sine, cosine, and tangent. It provides a detailed introduction to the methods and concepts of general physics. 

Heavily emphasizing vector analysis, this text is ideal preparation for a university-level physics course. It provides the student with a strong background in one-dimensional and two-dimensional motion, Newton's laws and their application, gravity, work and energy, momentum, periodic motion, waves, optics, electrostatics, electrodynamics, electrical circuits, and magnetism. 

Sixteen modules are spent exploring Motion in One Dimension, One-Dimensional Motion Equations and Free Fall, Two-Dimensional Vectors, Motion in Two Dimensions, Newton’s Laws, Applications of Newton’s Second Law , Uniform Circular Motion and Gravity, Work and Energy, Momentum, Periodic Motion, Waves, Geometric Optics, Coulomb’s Law and the Electric Field, Electric Potential, Electric Circuits, Magnetism.

Piano Lessons

Description: Piano lessons include instruction in note reading on the musical staff as well as ear training and music theory. Students learn piano technique, rhythm, improvisation, and performance preparation. An opportunity for students to share their music with family and friends will be at the end of the school year. Music lessons help students to gain confidence, expression, consistency in working toward a goal, and emotional enjoyment. Students will have fun and work hard to reap the benefits of making music at their fingertips!

 

PreK - K Class (10:00 am – 1:00 pm)

Ages 4 – 5 years old (must be potty-trained)

Description: Pre-K to Kindergarten is a big transition year for many young ones who are eager to learn. This group will be focusing on engaging the children to harness the beginning love of wonder and excitement while introducing the basic concepts they should know by the time they enter their “formal” learning years that are considered kindergarten and first grade. We will be using songs, motor skills, art, and games to learn.

What we will be learning:

  • introduce letters and phonics, 

  • concepts of print, 

  • understanding our reading, 

  • beginning reading, 

  • writing, 

  • numbers,

  • basic skills that go with learning. 

These concepts will be mastered through interdisciplinary thematic units. There will be intentional breaks placed in the schedule to encourage social growth and self-regulation skills. By the end of the year, the children in the group will be ready for kindergarten to first grade.

When teaching younger children, the learning is activity-based with games, songs, and art. Each time I teach a lesson or concept, I tailor the learning to the children that I am teaching at that specific time. This may mean speeding up or slowing down the curriculum if need be.

What to expect each week: 

  • Welcome activities that will incorporate social/emotional learning to help children learn how to cope with social situations including expressing their feelings. 

  • Literacy concepts and activities that include writing, comprehension, and phonics.

  • Beginning math concepts and activities that include number recognition and beginning math computation.

  • Thematic units each month that are incorporated into all subjects.

  • The parent/guardian will be given “homework” to help each child grow in the developmental area to become the best child they can be.

Psychology

Description: Through this year long class, students will be introduced to the field of psychology through a Biblical worldview. Topics covered will include the history of psychology, lifespan development, stress and health, research methods, psychological disorders, and the multiple branches of psychology. Objectives will be covered through instruction, class discussion, and classroom activities. Students should expect weekly homework.

 

Sr. High Writing (Online course)

Appropriate Grade Levels: 9-12

Pre-requisites: Students should have basic proficiency in grammar or understand that the class will not provide detailed, active instruction in grammar, either through live classes or through paper feedback.

Teacher: Ms. Ellen Finnigan

Text: The Iliad translated by Richmond Lattimore - purchase on Thrift Books or Amazon     

Required Materials: A Study Guide written by Ms. Finnigan will be included with the course, but families must purchase a copy of The Iliad translated by Richmond Lattimore by the first day of class.

Supply Fee: Students can turn in their work to Ms. Finnigan each week and receive detailed, written feedback, as well as extra tips and pointers, for a fee of $85 per semester. Students who upgrade will have access to Ms. Finnigan's weekly online office hours, free of charge, for one semester, as an added bonus.

Description: Students will learn and practice a comprehensive array of techniques that are required to write good academic papers at a high school (and college) level, from active reading and note-taking to argumentation and source documentation. We'll review basic concepts like how to write a good thesis statement, but emphasis will always be placed on developing critical thinking skills first and foremost. By becoming a better thinker, your child will become a better writer! This class teaches analytical skills through the analysis of great literature with occasional writing "workshops". For the first 16-20 weeks, we'll read The Iliad and use that as a spine for the course. We'll also study the work of a few master essayists. The last 10-12 weeks of the course will be tailored according to Ms. Finnigan's evaluations of student work as well as input from students and parents, for a truly customized experience.

 

U.S. Geography

Description: Join us as we travel throughout God’s country - the United States - by studying two states per week! We will visit all seven regions and learn fun and interesting information, and even some very silly laws! We hope to try some different foods as well. We will also focus on map skills throughout this course. Students will complete assignments each week to culminate with a binder full of wonderful information about all 50 states! Students will be memorizing the states and capitals too! We will hold a trivia night at both Family Nights in December and in the Spring.

 

World Religions (1st semester)

Description: Through this semester long class, students will learn the history, beliefs, mythology, practices, and social organizations of the world’s five main religions including Christianity, Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Judaism. Students will end the semester with a research project presentation about any other world religion of his or her interest. Objectives will be covered through instruction, class discussions, interactive learning, and partial student-led teaching. This course would be a helpful building step for Apologetics. Students should expect weekly homework to fulfill research project requirements.
