3rd-4th Zoology/Botany

Zoology for Kids: OLogy | AMNH

Let your child’s imagination and creativity meet the science and plant world as we use classification skills to study characteristics of many creatures. This is a fun engaging lab to help children learn about insects, animals and plants! The instructor will partner with Shangri La for videos and games to learn about many plants and animals native to our area. No homework will be assigned.  INFO

Physical Science

 In this lab  students will conduct experiments and see demonstrations to study such concepts as the atmosphere, different cycles, weather, forces and motion, electricity, atoms and molecules, waves, sound, and light. The scope and sequence of the Apologia Exploring Creation with Physical Science text will be used along with other science curricula to enhance experimentation. This is not a complete course, but a lab. Students should be completing coursework at home regularly and/or be enrolled in the CHSEL+ Physical Science class on Tuesdays, to gain the most benefit from this lab. INFO

Biology

Students will study how living things interact and impact them in daily life through experimentation and study of the biological world around them. They will spend  time working with partners and in groups to help you practice communication skills while working through experiments related to a general biology study. This class will be interesting and interactive and will complete the lab credit of a biology course. The scope and sequence of Exploring Creation with Biology will be used, but is not required for lab completion as labs are independent of home study. INFO

Chemistry

CHSEL Chemistry Lab takes students through the basics, using hands-on experiments, data collection and calculations that reveal the truth about the world around us! This is NOT a Chemistry course, but a supplemental lab designed to enhance and stimulate the home taught chemistry course.  We use the scope and sequence as laid out in the Discovering Design with Chemistry text , but any high school Chemistry text can and may be adapted to this lab. In these labs (Pre-Algebra, Algebra I and Algebra II) students will use all the time to find where concepts are not understood by examining problems that are missed in daily work. The goal of helping students tackle their daily math assignments with greater confidence will be accomplished by strengthening weak understanding of foundational math concepts. Students will complete their math exercises each week and work to discover errors that can be corrected with some instruction.

Students will explore art, music, and nature through songs, poetry, imaginative play, games, and simple crafts. INFO

1st-6th Art w/Mrs. Carissa

For little artists and budding artistis- Art with Ms. Carissa will take the students through a variety of the different artistic styles and mediums.  Watercolor, oil and chalk pastels, acrylic and tempera paint, and clay will be used. We also attempt to be involved in various art contests throughout the year. Children will be pointed toward their artistic talents, allowing them to see them as a gift from their Creator. INFO

7th-12th Developing Artists

Through mediums such as pencil, colored pencils, watercolors, and acrylics  students will explore existing talent as well as develop new techniques in drawing and painting. This lab centers around the student's talent and interest rather than that of the teacher. Each student will explore the varieties of art and create works based on the basics of art and work with the teacher to complete his/her own projects. Exemplary art will be entered into local art competitions. INFO

This music opportunity is designed for students who have achieved a certain degree of proficiency on their instrument.  An audition, or director approval is required for admission into this class. Students will continue developing their musical skills as well as have the opportunity to participate in All Region Band auditions and Solo and Ensemble Contest to earn individual awards in addition to a concert.  INFO

Writing Level A 5th-6th

This is the first level of IEW.  This is a writing lab for elementary students new to the Structure and Style method and it lays a solid foundation of writing skills. Over the course of 28 weeks, students will learn how to effectively use a wide range of structural models and stylistic techniques in their compositions, as they write on a variety of enjoyable fiction and non-fiction topics. Designed for students in middle school, or early high school if the student is a reluctant writer, who are concurrently completing grammar and literature exercises in their home studies. This lab does address some grammar issues along with style and structure elements, but is not a complete instruction course for mechanics and use. 
Students will be introduced to or continue skills in note-taking, key word outlining, narrative writing, summaries, critiques, reports and essay writing as developed through the Teaching Structure and Style practicum with the intention of encouraging critical thinking and personal expression. We will work on each unit in the practicum with consideration for each student's academic level. They will evaluate well-written short stories, articles and essays prior to writing. INFO

Writing Level C (9th-10th)

Students will be introduced to or continue skills in note-taking, key word outlining, narrative writing, summaries, critiques, reports and essay writing as developed through the Teaching Structure and Style practicum with the intention of encouraging critical thinking and personal expression. Creative Movement is a great way for children to explore movement through music and physical activities. It also helps build creative thinking, problem solving, gross motor and collaboration skills. We will focus on movement through spatial awareness, creating shapes, letters and patterns, balance through rhythmic activities, hand eye coordination, team work, simple games and more! INFO

Tuesday CHSEL+ Class Offerings

CHSEL Plus is an instructional "class" option now offered to help guide the daily work at home for completion of middle and high school subjects. Each class may include assignments for at home completion guided by parent, weekly instruction, grading and/or testing, and many are supplemented with the interactive, group activities offered  in the Friday CHSEL "labs."

Life Science 6th-10th

Exploring all levels of creation, children will learn how everything works togather in God's design. Life science will be a combination of reading, labs and hands on projects both in the classroom and at home.

Earth Science/Biosphere 8th-12th

Learn about the Biosphere through homesteading! We will study the interconnectedness and cyclical design of nature through the principles and practice of regenerative gardening practices and whole use of harvested animals.  From the bottom of the food chain to the top of the food chain, all lives are connected and are designed to support each-other. (what a lesson from nature!)  There will be homework that consists of planning worksheets (explained in class) and research done online.INFO

This classroom model covers the traditional second-year algebra topics, as well as a full semester of informal geometry. Pre-Algebra

Utilizing an incremental approach to math, your students will learn in small doses at their own pace, increasing retention of knowledge and satisfaction! INFO

Math Skills Builder

Using a variety of manipulatives, saxon worksheets, and memorization techniques, students will define math concepts and follow with memorization and skill development in order to master the skills necessary to proceed to advanced math applications. This classroom model is designed to give students extra practice and competency in addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts (Kumon style), conversion of mixed numbers, least common multiples, fractions (dividing,multiplying), decimals, percent, simple equations, exponents, absolute value, square roots, and calculator skills.


Literature and Language



IEW Writing B, C 7th-10th

This is an assignment completion and help workshop that will enable students to work on the assignments given in Friday instructional lab for levels A, B or C while receiving assistance and tutoring through the writing process. Some grammar and mechanics assistance can be given during the writing process, but an emphasis will be on ensuring the Structure and Style taught in writing labs is understood and completed. Since the assignments, boardwork and instruction are given on Fridays, this class is supplemental and requires participation in the Friday lab. INFO

Essay and Public Speaking 10th-12th

This classroom model will include some of the IEW High School Essay Writing Intensive curriculum and videos, but will not be limited to that material and does not require prior knowledge of IEW Structure and Style. IEW "Speech Boot Camp" will be incoroporated into the course along with numerous supplemental materials including vocabulary enhancement and grammar checking. The goal: to complete each type of essay that is a standard requirement for high school writing followed by a public speaking practicum for each type, ending with introduction to debate. INFO

Grammar, Spelling, Vocabulary

This classroom model includes daily assignments, daily assignment check and corrections, weekly lecture/instruction, and weekly quizes tests. One day a week is insufficient to complete all material, therefore, assignments will be completed at home and to be turned in on due dates as specified on classroom dashboard and/or each meeting day.  Students should be able to independently learn most lessons throughout the week with reinforcement during weekly lecture/instruction time.  INFO

HS Spanish

This classroom model includes assignments, assignment check, weekly lecture/instruction, worksheets accompanying assignments. The Friday lab is designed to enrich this class.Through the use of new areas of topic, students will continue building vocabulary in an effort to expand upon conversation. Students will be given opportunities to practice speaking with a partner and grow in their ability to converse in Spanish. Students are expected to study new vocabulary at home. It is imperative that students know their vocabulary in order to best utilize their time in class with their partner. Students will also be expected to do listening activities at home.


History and Geography



World Geography 8th-10th

This class for high school geography credit will use Trail Guide to World Geography and Trick Geography to locate, identify and memorize different countries.  The class will delve into what makes a country or a culture, such as the language, music, the arts and food, and how that may or may not relate to other parts of our world. There will be homework assigned regarding the specific lesson or continent studied.  We plan to hold a Geography Bee at the end of the year to display what students have learned.INFO

TX History 6th-10th

This class will dive into Texas history via book lessons, engaging labs, and projects. We will explore topics from prehistoric Indians to present day Texas culture and governement. Homework will be assigned.

Gastronomy 8th-12th

The art and practice of selecting, cooking and eating food can be used as a compliment to Earth Science.  Students will prepare and serve a meal for the Co-op every class period.  They will leave this class with the Texas Food Handlers Safety Certification and (hopefully!) a few original recipes. 

Musical Theater 6th-12th

This classroom model will learn auditioning, broadway style vocals, acting techniques and choreography. They will use these learned skills to develop as a performer throughout the course. Actors will build their acting and singing repertoire, build confidence and learn more about the history of Musical Theatre! Students may participate in an optional vocal performance at the CHSEL Christmas program. All students are required to participate in our full musical production in April.

Woodwind, Brass and Percussion Sectionals 4th-12th

Once enrolled in beginner band, students are highly encouraged to attend the FREE sectional classes according to their instrument! These are group lessons designed to meet the need beginners have for individual instruction. In sectionals, students will have good playing habits reinforced, music reading and playing skills reinforced, and if they progress enough and are old enough, they may be allowed to participate in Solo and Ensemble.

Theater Practicum 6th-12th

Learn what it takes to run a production behind the scenes of live theatre!
Students will work on set design, costuming, prop design, stage management, box office and stage makeup.
