Do you want to help your children learn through literature?
Welcome to Literature for young readers!
Teacher: Sarah Prescod, lover of good books.
This year we will be reading from a selection of modern and classic literature. Students will become book detectives! They will learn how to identify both the protagonist and antagonist, peel back the layers of the story to reveal how the characters, plot, setting, are used by the author to communicate the underlying story. In class, students will be encouraged to freely share their thoughts and ideas, as well as express their opinions. By gathering and analyzing the clues from the text students will be able to find the true message and intention of the author.
The four award-winning books we will read this year are:
From the Mixed-Up Files of Mrs. Basil E. Frankweiler
The Great Turkey Walk
There are three parts to this class:
- Reading– Students will read in class and at home. At home reading assignments will be no more than 45 mins. – 1 hour per week.
- Weekly Discussion – Each week new vocabulary will be defined, new literary elements may be introduced, and a short discussion on the previous weeks reading will take place.
- Activities/Projects – Projects will be worked on throughout the course of the book, others will begin after completion.
