FAQs

Q:

When does CHSEL meet?

A:

We meet on Fridays during the regular school year beginning in September and finishing in May. Each lab day opens at 8:45 am. Labs begin at 9:00 am and go until 2:30 pm.  We have a variety of labs offered each hour from 9-noon and then an hour and a half science lab  that begins at 1 pm.  Our labs are for K4-12th grade.

Q:

Where does CHSEL meet?

A:

CHSEL meets at Ridgewood Church, 2920 Lake Arthur Dr. in Port Arthur. The Ridgewood church family has graciously allowed us to use the facility and only asks that we care for it as our own. Each family, teacher and administrator will take part in some way in helping maintain the facility and show our thanks to our gracious host.

Q:

How much participation is required?

A:

Families may choose their levels of participation based upon their needs and ability to participate each week. The nature of a co-op is such that each family must participate at some level, but is not required to teach or assist and may choose to leave the campus when their student(s) are in lab. Teachers are independent contractors who provide quality labs at affordable prices within the structure and venue of CHSEL. Members may be lab assistants and subs when those are available or may offer services to teachers by participating as a coordinator in specified areas. CHSEL encourages volunteers to think of ways to grow our community of support and help one another in this fabulous journey called home schooling.

Q:

What is the cost to participate?

A:

In accordance with the mission of CHSEL, we try to keep lab costs far below that which other organizations charge for similar labs provided outside of the co-op format. The co-op format allows us to make labs more affordable because of the volunteer time each family contributes.

Each family must pay an annual Lighthouse membership application fee of $40  in addition to a registration fee of $60 per year, which will be applied over two payments across the semesters. The labs vary in cost from $15 per lab per student/month to $35 per lab per student/month and each has a small supply fee associated.

An example of cost would be: A Family has two children, each taking three labs. Student A takes two labs that are $20/mo. and one that is $15 /mo., student B takes two labs at $20/mo. and one at $25/mo. The monthly cost for that family would be $115. Registration and supply fees for the semester would amount to $125 bringing the first payment for the year to $240 with a monthly payment of $115 each month thereafter. CHSEL provides many opportunities to reduce fees and tuition through contracting as a lab assistant, acting as an ocassional assistant or substitute for a teacher, tuition credits for volunteer service as well as scholarships and fundraising opportunities. It all depends on the level of involvement that works for each family.

Q:

Is there a place for volunteers?

A:

At Lighthouse Educational Services we always welcome volunteer help. We believe the more you put in, the more your family will receive out of the entire membership experience. CHSEL is no exception. The more help we have on lab day and in preparation before labs begin, the more smoothly things will go. All of our administrators are VOLUNTEERS, working at their own expense and at the expense of their families to make CHSEL a great experience for everyone. Please JOIN THEM.  We have coordinators working to make Lighthouse a full family experience instead of just labs.

You and your family can join in and help us out in:

Fundraisers to help offset costs for families or raise funds for projects

Field Trips to enhance our labs and your home school

Yearbook to help keep a record of all our great times together

Social Events to help us form a community and enjoy fellowship

And more!
