About The Elective Collective

The Elective Collective (TEC) is a Christian, performing arts-focused home education co-op that meets in the Gahanna area. It is open to all families whose oldest child has reached the age of required notification (six years old by Sept. 30). Preference is given to teens and older children, since there is a deep need for wholesome offerings for that age group in our community.

While we can cover all the academic bases at home, getting together in a group setting adds a little extra fun to the week, and gives the children (and parents) an opportunity to build supportive relationships with like-minded people while working toward common goals. The mix of ages, philosophies, and learning styles makes things all the richer.

TEC OFFERS:

  • weekly elective classes
  • opportunities for older children and social support through high school
  • one full-length drama production per 12-week semester with a focus on teamwork and skill-building
  • support and encouragement, as fellow parents, on your home education journey
  • accountability (our policy is that 15 minutes early is on time, and on time is late)

PARENT INVOLVEMENT

The Elective Collective depends on parents to help create a successful co-op experience for all. Just as home education is a family endeavor, so is our co-op, and parents stay at TEC with the children for the duration of the day, either leading a class or serving as an adult helper in a class. Every effort is made to give all parents at least one hour off (independent of lunch) to allow for social time among the adults. The group's advisory board plans the schedule based on parent input and determines the various volunteer positions that will need to be filled every session.

Many adults seem to believe they don't have skills worth sharing, but this is not true! Whether it be first aid or basic car maintenance or the remnants of high school Spanish, each of us has something valuable to offer, and we set an example for our children by learning alongside them.
