HSA Staff Application

Your full name

We are currently working on our staffing for the 2024-2025 school year.  This application is for those who are interested in a paid teaching position or in bartering for some or all of their family costs by teaching or assisting every week that we are in class.  We do not promise barter positions to all who apply, but we try to fit in as many people as we can.   Below is some of the information that you should know about working at HSA.  Please read and check to acknowledge each one.

Teachers are a combination of people we hire and families that are bartering.  Our support staff is almost entirely made of barters, and they are a very important part of our program. We can not function without our amazing teachers and the faithful support staff!

Teaching at HSA is a bit different than a normal teaching job as ultimately, the parent is the one responsible for the student's progression, not the HSA teacher.  We partner with the parents to do what they can not do or is difficult to do at home.  We want to help them by doing labs and goopy projects (in class), offering opportunities for team interaction, discussion, and presentations, making them learn to take notes and do homework, and generally respond to someone other than their parents.  We give them quarterly grades on what they do for us, but ultimately, it is the parent who decides how to incorporate our grades into their NYS quarterly reports.

The commitment to be on staff at HSA is a responsibility that must be taken seriously as the families are relying on us to help them fulfill their requirements.  First and foremost, you must show up!  Those who are bartering are getting "paid" by having excellent teaching offered to their children. If you have accepted a barter position, then you are expected to be in classes any day that we have classes even if your children can't come, as we are still offering the service for them. We realize that may be impossible at times, but we would ask that you would try to make a plan for such an emergency.   Of course, we have to cover for missing staff by stretching the rest of the staff sometimes, but we try to keep that to a minimum. It would also be helpful if you have a "substitute barter" who we can call when needed.

Teachers who must miss a day need to plan for any absences as we do not cancel any classes or clubs when we are in session.  Teachers must send in detailed plans for each individual class.

NYS Covid Requirements:  We are hoping the Covid restrictions (masking, etc.. )will be a thing of the past by mid-September, but you should know that all HSA staff, including barters, will adhere to the requirements set up by the buildings we rent from, as well as what the HSA board determines to be most prudent.

Teaching positions:

HSA Teachers are independent contractors and are hired for the 28 school days of the year to cover a specific class.  We look for teachers who are knowledgeable and passionate about their subject area, and they will be paid or awarded credit based on the time commitment and expertise that their class demands.  Teachers must maintain their page on the website (initial set up minimally) and give quarterly feedback to the parents using the website tools.

Teaching at HSA is not just a job - it is a ministry!  You may not be teaching the Bible directly, but you will be discipling children and at times, their parents too!

We only meet 28 days in the entire school year.  It works great for someone who is passionate about teaching and wants a very part time position doing what they love to do).  It also works great for the homeschooling parent who is a teacher or is passionate about a subject and would like to teach while his/her kids is getting the full scope of teaching by others.

All staff will work directly with HSA administrators, Amy Barnhart and Heather Nichols.

Barter Positions:

Barter positions are onsite during the class time on Tuesday and usually include some set-up and/or clean-up. Barters will also be required to attend our biannual showcases as a teacher connecting with the families or as support staff helping the event run smoothly.

Unless you are holding a teaching position (which requires work at home too), barters are appropriated $10/hour of work as credit towards their HSA bill; therefore, bartering 1/2 day nearly covers the expenses for one child; bartering all day could cover the expenses for two children depending on position and if you help with set up and/or clean up.   You will be charged tuition or be assigned extra responsibilities as we can if you have more kids in the program.  We can look at your total cost after you sign up for classes and compare that to the barter time you have been assigned if needed.

Barters and teachers can not bring small children with them as they would disrupt the classrooms which are already busy enough!

Though we only require people who attend HSA to sign that they will respect the statement of faith, we do ask that all of our staff, including support staff, be willing to sign that they agree with it.  It reads:

Section 1. Preface

(a) Our Statement of Faith includes truths upon which Christians historically agree. It concerns the Authority of Scripture, the Deity of Christ, and the Person and Work of Jesus Christ (the Gospel) as revealed in Scripture. It is the faith once delivered to the saints (Jude 3, Ephesians 4:1-6) which distinguishes believers from non-believers. There are many other precious truths taught in the Bible over which godly men have differed in understanding. Therefore, this is not a statement of all that is important to believe, but simply what is essential for Christian fellowship and unity (Romans 15:1-6). The Statements on Gender, Morality and Family (Section 3) define the principles upon which LEAH Chapters are expected to function in society.

(b) We affirm the spiritual unity of believers through our common faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, and that individual doctrinal or practical differences which may exist, outside of the succeeding (Article II, §2 and §3), should not hinder the unity of Christian home educators.

Section 2. We Believe.

(a) The Bible to be the inspired, infallible, divinely preserved Word of God, the supreme and final authority for all faith and life.

(b) That there is one God, eternally existent in three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit.

(c) In the deity of our Lord Jesus Christ, His virgin birth, His sinless life, His miracles, His vicarious and atoning death through His shed blood on the cross, His bodily resurrection, His ascension, and His imminent bodily return in power and glory.

(d) That man was created in the image of God, but fell into sin and is therefore lost, and only those who put their faith in Jesus Christ alone, not trusting in any personal works whatsoever, can be saved.

(e) That salvation is the free gift of God brought to the sinner by grace and received by personal faith in the Lord Jesus Christ, Whose substitutionary death on the cross paid the penalty for man's sin.

(f) That the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to convict mankind of sin; and to indwell, guide, instruct, and empower the believer for godly living and service.

Section 3. Statements of Gender, Morality and Family

(a) That God created mankind in His image: male (man) and female (woman), sexually different but with equal personal dignity.  (Genesis 1:26-28, Romans 1:26-32, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11)

(b) That God created and ordered human sexuality to the permanent, exclusive, comprehensive, and conjugal “one flesh” union of man and woman, intrinsically ordered to procreation and biological family, and in furtherance of the moral, spiritual, and public good of binding father, mother, and child.  (Genesis 1:27, Genesis 2:24, Matthew 19:4-6, Mark 10:5-9, Romans 1:26-27, 1 Corinthians 6:9-11, Ephesians 5:25-27, Revelation 19:7-9, Revelation 21:2)

(c) That the term “marriage” has only one meaning: the uniting of one man and one woman in a single, exclusive union, as delineated by Scripture. (Genesis 2:18-25) God intends sexual intimacy to occur only between a man and a woman who are married to each other. (1 Corinthians 6:18; 7:2-5; Hebrews 13:4) God has commanded that no intimate sexual activity be engaged in outside of a marriage between a man and a woman.

(d) That any form of sexual immorality (including but not limited to: adultery, fornication, homosexual behavior, bisexual conduct, bestiality, incest, and use of pornography) is sinful and offensive to God. (Matthew 15:18-20; 1 Corinthians 6:9-10.)

(e) That the term “family” means either a married couple as defined in 3(b) and 3 (c) who are usually blessed with one or more biological and/or adopted children or grandchildren.

Support staff needs to be engaged and focused on supporting the teaching staff.  Expectations would include tasks like:

* Before and after class, set up and clean up as assigned and assist teacher in setting up the lessons by getting copies to the copying staff or whatever else they need.

* During class, if not otherwise directed, watch the students for behavioral issues.  Be very familiar with the rules, so you know what to expect.  If students are talking while the teacher is trying to teach, remind them to be quiet. Make sure they are not eating, drinking, texting, passing notes, etc.  Just moving near unruly students or separating them can help a lot.    Be discreet so as not to disturb the class and be gracious and loving (the students are in training), but please be consistent!

* During breaks, watch the rooms and halls for any behavior that is concerning.  We do let the kids have a break, talk, eat (without being messy), and relax a bit, but fighting (even with words), running wildly, and leaving the building is not allowed.  Sometimes they need to be reminded to move quickly and go to the bathroom, etc., so they make it to the next class!  If anything really concerns you, please let the administrators know after you have addressed it.

* Lunchtime is especially important.  This is a time that we really need the support staff to focus on taking care of the kids.  Kids should eat at a table and clean up when they are done.  Younger kids may need assistance with their food.  We have a lot of children with allergies in the group, so we are a nut free group, and you are the primary look-outs for any nut products.   Please make sure kids are cleaning up themselves and their area.  Clean tables thoroughly after eating.  Remind kids to go to the bathroom at the end of the lunch period, so they won't have to go as soon as class starts.  Pick up major crumbs before they get trampled in, etc.

* Set up and clean up.  If you are assigned to set up, that would include making sure tables and chairs are where the teacher wants them, getting a white board and stand if they are not already in the room, possibly making copies, and assisting the teacher however they direct.  Clean-up includes:  wiping down the tables before they are put away, resetting any furniture that stays in the room, vacuuming or sweeping, emptying the trash and putting a new bag in, and putting anything from your area that belongs to us away, and what belongs to students in the "Lost and Found".  Most barter positions will include either set up, clean up, or both.

* If you are not in a class, you should always seek out the administrative staff for direction (helping in a classroom that needs extra help, making copies, etc.)  Please treat this position as a job and do not expect any free time to accomplish other tasks during the day.
