Ages: 7-9, 10-12, 13+
Materials fee: $5.00 + access to discussion books listed below
This class will discuss literature using the story chart. We will use picture books to introduce each concept on the chart (Exposition, Rising Action, Climax, Denouement, Conclusion, Plot, Setting, Characters, Theme). In addition, we will learn about the protagonist, antagonist and types of conflict.
We will use picture books to introduce and discuss the elements of the story chart. Approximately once a month we will discuss a longer, chapter book (assigned ahead of time) using the story chart structure to guide our discussion. The Socratic Method will be the main “teaching technique.” Using questions and dialogue, the goal is to help the students learn how to ask questions about the books they read, think about them critically, discover the themes the author put into the text, and talk about how those themes impact their lives.
Chapter Books for the 2019-2020 ECHO Year: Charlotte’s Web by E.B. White (October); Frindle by Andrew Clements (November); Treasures of the Snow by Patricia St. John (December); Pollyanna by Eleanor H. Porter (January); Wonder by R.J. Palacio (February); Five Children and It by E. Nesbit (March).
Books can be found at your local library, Amazon (either to buy the physical book or the kindle version - several books are free on kindle), abebooks.com (used books, cheap prices!). Students can read the books themselves, you can read them aloud as a family, use audio books, read them on a Kindle. Any format is acceptable as long as students know the story by the discussion date so we can discuss it! Specific dates for each book discussion will be listed before the ECHO year starts.

Teacher Resources: Teaching the Classics by Center for Lit; Deconstructing Penguins by Lawrence and Nancy Goldstone

Ages: 5-6, 7-9
Materials fee: $5
Materials note: 7 – 9 year olds will need to bring their own “Baroque” (not German) fingering recorder to class weekly. Yamaha or Aulos are reliable quality brands for beginners and many other brands are fine as well. They are available from music stores like Ted Brown Music or online. If your family already owns a recorder here is how to tell if it is Baroque or German fingering: a German-fingering recorder has hole five (counting from the top) which is smaller than hole four, whereas Baroque recorders have hole four which is smaller than hole five. Most recorders sold are the fingering you will need, but it’s good to check.
Music is an amazing part of God’s creation! Our class will learn the basic elements of music including rhythm and note-reading skills, as well as using our ears, bodies, and voices. Activities will include singing, listening, movement, rhythm instruments, and games. Students will describe and discuss music: is it loud or soft, high or low, and what instruments do we hear? We will focus on one or two composers and their work over the course of the year, learning about who the composer was and how their music is unique. Students who have previously taken music class are welcome to return: we play and sing new music each year!

On The Spot
Ages: 7-9, 10-12
Materials fee: $7
On the Spot is a hands-on, interactive class that focuses on building positive peer interactions and communication.  Students will practice both impromptu creative problem solving skills in groups, along with having longer periods of time to work to create solutions to presented problems.  Challenges will prompt children to use words, actions, or materials to demonstrate solutions, while the teacher works as a facilitator.   This active class is great for kids who like to think outside-the-box or would like an opportunity to practice creative thinking with the support of peers and adults.

Order in the Court (a mock trial course)
Ages: 10-12, 13+
Materials Fee: $5
This class is an introduction to the court system. It will focus on vocabulary, procedure, thinking skills, as well as performing mock trials. I look forward to having your children in class!

Prep for Success
Ages: 13+
Materials fee: $5
Preparing for Success presents a kaleidoscope of topics that our youth will encounter as they prepare to enter the world of independence.  Students will explore topics that are becoming of high interest for them as they approach the age of more responsibility: job interviews, preparing applications, creating resumes, income and expenses, budgeting, meal planning, and vehicle purchases. From leadership to organization, management to creativity, Preparing for Success is a class that will support our growing adolescents as they enter into God’s world.

Ages: 3-4 AND potty-trained
Materials fee: $17
Please Note: Our preschool class stays together the entire ECHO day and does not switch classes like the other groups. You will only need to choose preschool once. There is only one materials fee for the entire day.

Writing the Novel Way
Ages 13+
Materials fee: $5
Students will also need a binder dedicated to this class, along with paper and pencils. Homework will be assigned likely every week, and IS mandatory. Access to a computer (for writing) is recommended.

God has given people many different ways to communicate, and one of them is through the gift of language. The purpose of this class is to inspire people to use language to create a novel, and to enjoy doing it! It is more fun to learn language skills when you have a tangible creation in your hands at the end! We will brainstorm, plan major events in our stories, define and develop the main characters, describe the settings and more. There will be story sharing amongst the students, and peer reviews. We will work on writing heartily, and keeping a reader’s interest. In this course, we will go over grammar, spelling, capitalization, and punctuation. There WILL be writing!
“For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” Ephesians 2:10
