FAQs

Q:

What is TLC?

A:

TLC is an inclusive, secular homeschooling community and is neutral on matters of politics, religion, lifestyle, and educational philosophy. As such, we strive to be respectful of each family’s homeschooling path. Membership in TLC will be considered for home-educating families with school-aged children. By design, TLC meets in 10-week sessions as a co-op offering two class periods and a lunch period with recess. Parental participation is required; TLC is not a drop off co-op or a resource for a preschool-only program.

Q:

How do I join TLC?

A:

On the homepage of this website, click on the tab marked "Join" and follow the prompts. Approval is dependent on passing a background check and agreeing to the requirements of membership as outlined in our "Policies, Procedures, and Permissions".

Q:

When and where does TLC meet?

A:

We meet for classes on Mondays from 10:30am - 1:00pm at a facility in Tumwater. For security purposes, we don't share the address on this public page, but you may email us for more specific information at thurstonlearningcooperative@gmail.com. We also have field trips which are held at varying times and places.

Q:

How much does it cost to join TLC?

A:

Costs associated with each session of TLC are as follows:

Membership Fees: $50 per family (includes building use fees, website cost, and incidental cleaning and business supplies)

Insurance Fees: $7.50 per family member attending TLC (ie: Mom + 3 kids = 4 x $7.50 = $30)

Class Fees: vary depending on what the class covers. Each class fee covers the entire 10-week session. In general, classes range from $0-$30.

Q:

Do I have to teach a class? What if I have never taught a class before?

A:

TLC is a cooperative (aka co-op) that relies on parental involvement on every level. We ask parents to be willing to lead or co-lead a class. We also ask every parent to be willing to help as needed in other capacities such as assisting in a class or being a last-minute sub, We are a great group with a good mix of more experienced homeschoolers as well as some newbies so there are ready-made mentors to help you. Our goal is to provide a good mix of classes that moms and kids will enjoy participating in.

Q:

What if the class my child wants is full?

A:

Class enrollment is done entirely online through this website and is on a first-come, first-served basis. We want everyone to have fun at TLC so we ask that your child tries out the available class and, if it isn't a good fit, we will work with you and the lead teachers in your child's age group to find a better solution!

Q:

Does TLC use a specific curriculum?

A:

No. TLC does not espouse or use any specified educational philosophy or curriculum. Our classes are thought up, organized and planned by the volunteering parents and based on the interests of the children and parents. The volunteers can utilize many resources in their classes. There is no curriculum or standard achievement measurement used or given for the volunteers. These classes are meant to enhance and enrichment your family's homeschool education--not replace it. Each class is approved by TLC's Board and must meet the group guidelines of inclusivity by remaining respectful and neutral on matters of politics, religion, lifestyle, and educational philosophy.

Q:

Do you make accommodations for allergies?

A:

If your child has severe food allergies, please inform the Board when applying for membership so that we may determine if we are able to provide a safe environment for your child at TLC.
