FAQs

Q:

What is HOCC?

A:

HOCC (Homeschoolers of Collier County, Inc.) is an active, local homeschool support group.  Our annual membership fee is $35 per family and membership runs from Sept 1st through Aug 31st.

We host park days, field trips, art events, family events, potlucks, get-togethers, clubs, holiday parties and whatever else our members can create.  We share community hosted homeschool-related events with each other.  Members may ask questions and receive information and support from other members.  HOCC is a community and gives your family the opportunity to meet and make homeschooling friends to help enrich your lives.

HOCC's members live in  Naples, Marco Island, Bonita Springs, Fort Myers and other nearby cities and towns.  Though primarily based in Collier County,  we have many members who live in Lee County.

Q:

What is HOCC's mission statement?

A:

The purpose of the Homeschoolers of Collier County, Inc., is to provide support to its members, regardless of race, religious beliefs, home education philosophy or choice of curriculum.

Q:

What type of group is HOCC?  Secular, inclusive, religious, statement of faith?

A:

HOCC is an inclusive homeschool support group, meaning that all homeschoolers and unschoolers are welcome to pay our fee and join our group.

Though generally secular in nature, we welcome the sharing of homeschool-related resources or events that might be of interest to our members that are hosted by any faith-based or non-faith-based group without prejudice.

Q:

What does the $35 fee pay for?

A:

$8 per family of the fee goes to Homeschool Life for the use of this website and forum (this fee varies by the year and is determined by Homeschool Life).  The rest of the money is used for administrative costs (including domain fees, P.O. Box, renewal of the Florida Incorporation status), event room rental fees and insurance for the room rentals (if required by the venue), paper products (plates, cups, cutlery, napkins, tablecloths) for our events with food, craft supplies for kids' events, occasionally food or special events organized by the Board of Directors if tthere is a surplus in the budget (usually near the end of the homeschool year) or other costs that the Board of Directors determined to be of value to the membership.

Each year, the elected Board of Directors will create and publish a proposed Budget listing planned expenditures. Members can look around on the home page to find it.

Q:

Are members required to organize or host an event?

A:

No, there is no requirement for members to host or organize an event each year.  Members are all welcome and encouraged to host or organize any event, or share an event or resource that they feel is of interest or benefit to our members, but not all members want to do so and that is totally fine.

Q:

How long has the Homeschoolers of Collier County existed?

A:

HOCC has been a homeschool support group in Collier County for over 20 years.

Q:

What types of events does HOCC host?

A:

We tend to have regular field trips to a large variety of venues, museums, nature settings, attractions and local businesses.  Our group hosts park days and swim days.  Our members sometimes arrange homeschool-related classes (on-going and one-time) at a variety of local organizations and businesses, both for HOCC-members only and the general homeschool public. Each year is different but we generally have an Ice Cream Social - Not Back to School event, a Halloween Party, holiday events, a Multicultural Potluck or event, a Valentine's Party, a Science Fair and a Promotion Party to celebrate the end of the homeschool year.  All members are welcome to plan events or join planning committees to assist with any events they choose to help with, but members are also needed to simply attend and enjoy.

If you are not yet a HOCC member, you may take a look at our Public Calendar to get an idea of some of the events.

Q:

Does HOCC have anything for teens?

A:

Teens are welcome at most (or all) of our events but they do tend to appreciate teen-only events as well.  We tend to try to have some teen/tween focused events, like Teen Art Workshop, Teen Holiday Parties, Teen Movie Night or Teen/Tween clubs, but it mostly depends on whether or not a member sets one up.  You can take a look at the Directory to see what ages are listed for kid members and take a look at the calendar (present, future and past) to get an idea of what Teen Events might already be planned.  If your teen has an interest (board games, movies, video games, art or crafts), you are encouraged to try hosting or organizing an event that fits your schedule, and adding it to the calendar.  We can help to encourage  our teen members to attend and try it out.

Q:

Are babies and toddlers allowed at HOCC events?

A:

Most of our events are all ages, and all family members are welcome (though not always our fur babies).  Occasionally, there will be an event with an age range, perhaps a club geared toward a certain age range of child, and there should be a notation as to whether it is suitable to bring along siblings as well, or whether drop-off is preferable. Historically, there have been a few field trips where the venue required a minimum age, like 10, due to hazards within the  building or some other restriction, but these will be noted.  As homeschoolers, we understand that we can't or don't always use babysitters and that we may have several children of different ages, and the majority of the time, everyone is welcome.   As a courtesy, it can be helpful to head out of a presentation if a little one is fussy so as not to distract from the program or interrupt the speaker, but we also expect most of our events to be very family and child-friendly.
