Kristen Winkelmann and I are excited to introduce what we hope will become a new tradition at ARCH - a spelling bee for 3rd - 8th graders, after co-op on 2 days - Wed., April 10 and April 17th.  The Bee will take place in the cafeteria, at 4:10 pm.   Next year, we hope to add a geography bee as well (for approximately 6 - 12th graders).  Also, next year, these will probably not take place in April, but maybe February or March.

Why?

We have wonderful opportunities for students on stage to perform as well as field day and other activities for those who are athletic, but we wanted to give a chance for some other gifts to shine also.  Plus, we hope it'll motivate your children to be a bit more excited about spelling and geography as you homeschool throughout the next school year.  

Not Highly Competitive or Stressful, Voluntary
We will work hard to keep this from being highly competitive, especially in how we introduce it to the children. Participation is completely voluntary, so please explain to your children the nature of a spelling bee and that there is no big prize for the winners.  We'll give 1st, 2nd and 3rd place ribbons as well as participation ribbons for all, in each group.  If you have a highly competitive child, who doesn't "lose well", especially with a crowd, this may not be the best activity for him or her.  Other participants will watch and listen to each child spell, as they wait for their turn.  Then, 2 or 3 finalists in each group will finish the bee or just be awarded at the Talent Show (April 24th). 

There is no preparation or studying required for your children, so this shouldn't add extra stress.  After signing up, we will make available 10 practice words for each group, to give your children an idea of the same type of words for their age group.

A.  3rd - 4th grade - April 17th

B.  5th - 6th grade - April 17th

C.  7th - 8th grade - April 17th

Sign Up by April 15th.  We are asking for $2 per child or $5 max per family to help with the awards.  Please pay with cash on the day of the Bee.

Lastly, plan for a long afternoon if your child joins the Bee.  We want to offer chances for success, so it could take a good hour or longer, depending on how long your children progress.  Please bring snacks to give before the Bee, to help your children endure.
