GBHE

Q:

Who are we?

A:

The mission of GBHE (Golden Belt Home Educators) exists to provide homeschool families with a Christ centered community and to enrich their home based learning. We work together as a community to provide homeschooling support, activities, classes and more.

We strive to have one field trip, a Mom's Night Out, and one Junior/Senior High Activity each month.

We have Academy Days Co-op that meets in the fall and spring providing class opportunities for K-12th.

We are working to start up sporting opportunities depending on interests shared and a Pre-school Playgroup that meets during the fall and spring.

Academy Days (Co-op)

Q:

What is Academy Days?  What is a co-op?

A:

Academy Days Mission Statement:  We desires to create an environment for educational enrichment where homeschooling families can work co-operatively in an atmosphere of mutual respect, within an organized Christian structure of flexibility, and interest driven exploration.

Academy Days has been called co-op in the past. Co-op classes are a cooperative effort among several families to supplement their children's home education by working together on subjects that are diffucult to teach at home or best taught in group settings.  Some activities, such as P.E/gym, need a large space or several participants to present the subject matter most effectively.  Other subjects, such a biology or chemistry lab, may require a financial investment in materials which can be shared with a group of families to lessen the expense for everyone.

We believe that we can accomplish more as a group by taking advantage of each other's strengths and experiences.  Parents are still the primary teachers for classes taught at Academy Days.  Academy Days Co-op does not keep records or create transcripts for

Q:

When and where do you meet?

A:

Academy Days meets in Great Bend, Kansas, once a week for 12 weeks in the fall (September - November) and then another 12 weeks in the spring (February - April).

Q:

What does it cost?

A:

The cost for families with 1-3 children - the current fee is $75/semester.  If a family has 4 or more children the cost if $100/semester.  We sometimes ask for supply donations however we try to have semester fees cover the cost of supplies, insurance, building use, and other misc costs.  The only other cost is helping with snack normally one time a semester or year.

Q:

How do I sign up for co-op?

A:

If you are interested in Academy Days, we ask that you email: gbhomeeducators@gmail.com to request being placed on a waiting list for the next session when it opens.   We have a running waiting list that we add to after registration closes for the upcoming session.  All prior participants of the last session have the first chance at registering prior to those on the waiting list, however we aim to add all interested families that are on the waiting list.

When registration opens for the next session a non-refundable $25 registration fee holds your place for the upcoming session; along with the wavier/registration form.  Open registration will be posted on the calendar or as an accouncement on the website if we have openings.

Q:

How are your classes divided up?

A:

Currently we are divided into Nursery, Pre-K, K-1st (Explorers), 1st-2nd (Navigators), 3rd, 4-5th, 6-12th (three sections/hour).  We aim to keep class sizes at 12-15 or smaller.  (Nursery & Pre-K are only for families with 1st grade students or older.)

We aim to provide science, art, gym (for younger students), and exploration classes.  Younger students have 40 minute classes and 6th-12th have hour long classes.

Q:

What are the expections for parents at Academy Days?

A:

Academy Days (Co-op) is a co-operative effort between homeschooling parents to provide classes and opportunities for their children that might be otherwise diffcult or too costly to provide at the family level.

We expect parents to be involved (volunteering as a teacher or helper) and present every week with their children during the duration of Academy Days. It is a commitment for a family to be involved.  It is important to schedule your appointments and travels around Academy Days to reduce interuptions as much as possible.

We aim to have gym, art and a science/STEM type class each session for the elementary students.
