Agape By-Laws

ARTICLE 1 Purpose  

Agape Family Schools is a forthright Christian organization established for the purpose of:

1. Providing support, encouragement and information for homeschooling families pertaining to homeschooling, and

2. Organizing activities for home schooled children including field trips and educational services


ARTICLE 2 Statement of Faith

1. God alone is sovereign, and the Bible alone, in whole and in part, is His inerrant and inspired Word and the final authority (Matthew 5:18, 2 Timothy 3:16-17).

2. There is only one true God co-existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit (Isaiah 44:6, Matthew 28:19, Ephesians 4:4-6).

3. Jesus Christ is the eternal Son of God who was born of a Virgin and lived among man without sin as a perfect man and perfect God. The central purpose of the coming of Jesus Christ was to pay the penalty for man's sin through His substitutionary death on the cross, the successful accomplishment of which was attested to by His subsequent visible, bodily resurrection. He is man's only provision for salvation (1 Timothy 2:5-6) as each person receives the gift of His atoning blood (Luke 1:26-35; John 1:14). 

4. The local church, next to the family, is God's main instrument through which He intends to carry out His work in the world. Although the members of this group attend a variety of churches, we recognize that we are all part of the larger body of believers. We are committed to unity in Christ and to respecting each other's personal faith and beliefs, not promoting our own or any denominational doctrine (Romans 15:5-7). 

5. Our activities must never weaken the Scriptural convictions of another Christian (Romans 12:2; 14:16-
22; 1 Thessalonians 5:22). Words spoken to another must be in harmony with God's Word when reproving or restoring a Christian brother or sister (Galatians 6:1; 1 Thessalonians 5:14; 2 Timothy 2:24-26). 

6. We understand "family" to mean one male and one female, legally married with or without children (Genesis 1:26-28), although we recognize the exception of a single parent, adopted, foster and step children or grandparents (James 1:27). We reject homosexual marriages or homosexual orientation because it is contrary to Scripture and the intentions of God in creation (Romans 1:18-32), and we believe that such relationships are destructive to children and the very idea of family. Further, we reject transitory, co-habitational relationships as being equally in violation of God's laws and incapable of providing the long term nurture and instruction needed by children and commanded by God (Proverbs 1:8-9; 2:1-11, Colossians 3:21 and Ephesians 6:4). In view of this, no homosexual or merely cohabitating "parents" are eligible for membership. 

7. We believe that the ultimate responsibility for education of children belongs to the family (Deuteronomy 4:9; 6:1-5, Proverbs 22:6). Thus we believe this is an inalienable right given by God which the state cannot create, destroy or alter. Families may allow another to teach cognitive information that children need to know, but all education must be under the ultimate control and supervision of the family. 


ARTICLE 3 Monthly Meetings

1. Meetings are held in the following months; August, September, October, November, January, February, March, April and May. The meetings will be scheduled for the last Monday evening of the month at 7:00 p.m. When there is a conflicting holiday, the meeting is held the previous week. 

2. These meetings are times of planning activities, encouraging one another, fellowship and information sharing. 

3. Parents considering or currently involved in home schooling are encouraged to attend the meetings. Grandparents are welcome. There is no provision for child care at the meetings. Nursing babies are welcome. 


ARTICLE 4 Officers  

Section I Leadership Qualifications




1. Must have been actively involved in Agape Family Schools for at least one year and have home schooled at least two years in grades K-12.

2. Are currently home schooling at least one child in grades K-12.  







3. Are able to advise active and prospective home school families about a variety of issues pertaining to home schooling. 





Section II Election of Officers

1. Elected officers shall be elected to a one year term starting on June 1st and ending the following year on May 30th.
2. The elected offices are President, Vice-President, Secretary and Treasurer.  

3. Nominations for elected officers shall be taken at the May general meetings. Nominations may also be submitted by mail (or email) to the Secretary and shall be accepted until May 1st. Members may nominate themselves or any other member as a candidate for office; however, the nominated member shall have the opportunity to refuse the nomination prior to being considered an official candidate. 

4. Election of officers shall be held at the May general meeting. Election shall be by official ballot, which shall be provided to each member present at the May general meeting. Members who wish to participate in the election, but are unable to attend the May general meeting, shall by May 1st, request from the Secretary an Absentee Ballot. Any and all Absentee Ballots shall be returned to the Secretary before the May general meeting. Members shall be elected to offices by a simple majority. 

5. Elected officers serve at the pleasure of the membership of Agape Family Schools. Any member may call for a new election by gathering the signatures of 10% of the total membership on a petition requesting the election of new officers. The petition shall be submitted to the Secretary. A new election shall be called if two-thirds of the members present at the following general meeting so vote. The new election shall be held at the next regularly scheduled Agape Family Schools general meeting. 

6. If the President is unable to complete his or her term, the Vice President shall assume the position of President for the remainder of the term and the remaining Officers shall appoint a new Vice President. If any other elected officer is unable to complete his or her term, the remaining officers shall appoint a replacement. Input from the Steering Committee may be solicited. 


Section III President

1. Is responsible for facilitating the decisions necessary to meet the goals and objectives of Agape Family Schools.

2. Presides over general and Steering Committee meetings.  

3. Prepares agenda of steering committee and general meetings.  

4. Recognized as the organizational focal point and spokesperson for Agape Family Schools business.

Section IV Vice President

1. Will perform the duties of the President in that officer's absence. 

2. May prepare and distribute Steering Committee or general meeting agendas 

3. May provide special project direction 

4. May promote Agape Family Schools to other organizations

Section V Secretary

1. Is responsible for recording, typing and distributing minutes of Steering Committee meetings.  

2. Files and maintains signed Statements of Faith of Steering Committee members.


Section VI Treasurer

1. Is responsible for collecting voluntary donations and other moneys, keeping financial records, making monthly reports to Steering Committee, and dispersing funds as the Steering Committee directs. 

2. May disperse moneys (up to $50) for standing annual activities without pre-approval by Steering

ARTICLE 5 Steering Committee  




Section I Steering Committee selection




1. The elected Officers of Agape Family Schools are the first participants on the Steering Committee.

2. Other Steering Committee members are those who are active Agape Family School participants, led by the Holy Spirit, and have signed a Statement of Faith and have a desire to actively participate as a member of the Agape Family Schools Steering Committee. 

3. The Steering Committee meets as often as necessary to conduct group business.  There may also be short Steering Committee meetings called prior to the Agape Family Schools general meetings. This committee oversees activities, discusses issues pertinent to the group and approves all leadership positions, excluding officers. Decisions are made based on a majority of those present. 

4. Participants must maintain spiritual integrity in all aspects of their lives, agree to subscribe to the Agape Family Schools' Statement of Faith, be in regular attendance of all group meetings whenever possible and be a well-informed ambassador of Agape Family Schools.

Section II Removal of Steering Committee members

1. If any person in a leadership position does not perform the duties of their position according to these by-laws, they shall be removed from their position by a majority vote of the Steering Committee members.

ARTICLE 6 Area Coordinators 

Section I: All area coordinators are those who are active Agape Family School participants, led by the Holy Spirit, and have signed the Statement of Faith. These are individuals who volunteer to facilitate specific activities and/or functions of Agape Family Schools. They may include but not be limited to: phone captain, newsletter editor, librarians, coordinators for the directory, field trips, testing, curriculum fair, electives, yearbook, annual events and hospitality.  

Section II: All Area Coordinators need to be approved by and accountable to the Officers and Steering Committee concerning their event. Term of service will be for one year. Current coordinators may volunteer for an additional year upon approval of Steering Committee.  




Section III: Each coordinator should develop and/or maintain a file which may include but not be limited to: responsibilities, deadline calendar, financial records and other pertinent information. 




Section IV: All Area Coordinators must make an annual presentation and report to the Steering Committee upon completion of their event or by the first week of June of the year they are responsible for the particular activity. 

Section V-Removal of Area Coordinators: If any person in a coordinator's position does not perform the duties of their office according to these By-Laws, they shall be removed from their office by a majority vote of the Officers and Steering Committee members.  




ARTICLE 7 Member Participation

1. Participation is on a voluntary basis.  







2. Participants are encouraged to read the Agape Messenger which is the main form of communication of Agape Family Schools.




3. Participants are discouraged from proselytizing, advocating partisan political activities, presenting business ventures, or promoting any personal interest not connected to home schooling through Agape Family Schools. Special situations warrant prior permission from the Officers before sharing information of this type to the group in general. 

4. Agape Family Schools, Inc. has a racially non-discriminatory policy towards participants; we will not discriminate towards any potential participant on the basis of race, color, national or ethnic origin.

ARTICLE 8 Amendments to official documents

1. The Statement of Faith may be altered or amended only by a unanimous decision of the Agape Family Schools Officers and Steering Committee. 

2. The remainder of the By-Laws may be altered or amended by a majority decision of the Steering

3. The amended information must be made known at the next regularly scheduled Agape Family Schools Parent's Meeting.
