Building Blocks for Reading, Spelling and Writing
From the New England Primer to the Noah Webster Blue Back Speller and finally to the McGuffy Readers, younger Americans learned to read! What made these simple texts so effective? It was the parents and teachers who knew the importance of good foundations from elementary principles. In the 1930's, Samuel T. Orton isolated the most elementary sounds of language and recognized the need to teach children with a multi-sensory approach. Orton, along with help from Gillingham, formed a teaching system that virtually eliminated the need for sight words. Romaldo Spalding took this method to the classroom with great success. The Riggs Institute began a similar work and added Harvey's Grammar. At Promise Point Homeschool Resource Center, we believe this is the best foundation for lifelong learners and are here to model this teaching method to you, the Christian home educator.
