The firefly was designated as Pennsylvania’s official state insect in 1974. Students from an elementary school near Philadelphia worked with their teacher to nominate the firefly as our state insect after learning there is a species named after our state. Commonly called “lightning bugs,” these insects brighten our summer nights with tiny, brilliant twinkling lights – a true wonder of nature. Join us for a virtual presentation on our state insect.
