Once again, we will be hosting Mr. Stephen Kozan.  He is an author, publisher and the founder of ReadyAimWrite Kids, a publishing company that produces books FOR kids written BY kids. During our lesson, Mr. Kozan will introduce himself, his illustrator, and give a little background information on where he came from and how he started - from writing simple poems on post-it notes to writing short stories. He will focus on the education process of writing, illustrating, and publishing, explaining the “can-do” attitude that can manifest from within, no matter the age.

He will show examples of how the "stick-figure" drawings he creates for his illustrators are turned into spectacular book-ready illustrations (you see, he can't draw.) And so, for the illustrators to know what it is that he’s seeing in his mind, he must provide them with something. That something is stick-figure art.

Perseverance. He talks about this important word for two reasons: One as a life-lesson, and another as a publishing lesson.

He will introduce us to InstaART- a software program where the students get to be the illustrators. Sort of! We will use InstaART to produce a mythical creature using aquatic, animal or insect body parts! The students are the creators. As a team, our students will volunteer an idea for a torso, head, front and back legs, tail, back bling, body accessories, background, and a name for their creature. Mr. Kozan will call on students who wish to participate and his illustrator will get to drawing!

Each student will need to have paper and pencil during the lesson because, once the presentation is finished, Mr. Kozan will ask each child to produce a one-page story to be turned in to him. He will read EVERY story submitted. (He is not looking for perfect spelling or correct grammar but for creativity.) Out of those stories submitted, he will pick several finalists. Those finalists will have the opportunity to expand their story in the next few months and resubmit them via mail. From those stories, Mr. Kozan will pick ONE story, per group, to be the winner and will work with the child and his/her family to PUBLISH the story!

To make this competition more fair, we will break the students into 2 groups:  4th-7th graders will meet with Mr. Kozan from 11:30a-12:30p and 8th-12th graders will meet from 1p-2p.  For families that have only students in one group, you do not need to be present the entire time.  For families that have students in BOTH groups, there is a cafe in the building where students can wait, play games, eat a bagged lunch, read, etc while siblings attend their grade-appropriate lesson.  Food and drink are allowed in the cafe.  A nursing mother's room and bathrooms are also available.  The building IS handicapped accessible.

NOTE:  If you'd like to read some of Mr. Kozan's own books, there is an order form below labeled "Mr Kozan's books".  All orders AND payment are due to Beth Mellott by Sat, Sept 11, 2021.
