Introduction to Wood Working is a fundamental class that will introduce students to the many possibilities that can be created when working with wood. Mr. Jay Gainor, a retired shop teacher, will teach the class in his home workshop and will cover wood shop safety, measurement, hardwoods and softwoods, using hand tools and some power tools. Other areas covered will be project selection, project planning and project completion.

This class will not take on any projects that require a high skill set in which multiple power tools would be used. The class is designed to familiarize students to a wood shop environment that may spark an interest for making future wood creations. This class will be very informational with some limited "hands on" instruction. With that said, the students will end this class with a finished project of their choice. Options include: a cutting board, a set of coasters, a stool, a cell phone holder or a birdhouse.

For those who are interested in seeing the workshop, Mr. Gainor is offering to open his workshop for parental perusal/approval on Monday, Mar 14, 2022 beginning at 7p and lasting no later than 8p. All attendees and parents are strongly encouraged to attend this event as parking arrangements and student expectations will be discussed.

Note: Parents are welcome to hang out in Mr. Gainor’s finished basement during the class or they may drop off their student(s) – whichever option they are more comfortable with. This class is a prerequisite for the Woodworking ll class, offered in the fall, where increased skill levels will be developed.

Note:  There are 2 forms that need to be signed by the parent/guardian and brought along to the first class.  They will be loaded here when available and emailed to anyone who is already signed up at the time.
