Another artistic adventure, which could be entered into the HAHA’s Art Show in May, is our sculpting class. Our local drawing artist also does sculpting so we will, once again, avail ourselves of her talent. Let your child explore a new medium and see what comes of it!

Using self-hardening sculpting clay, your high school student will create a bust (head of a person) about 4"-5" high. If it is someone specific that they know, it would be best to have at least a couple of photos to work from (different angles). They could choose to sculpt a bust from their own imagination, too. However, that's going to add a bit more of a challenge.

Instruction will focus on facial features (nose, cheekbones, chin, etc).

Supplies needed per student are:

1. 2.5# to 3# of Amoco Self-hardening Sculpting Clay. This clay does come in three types – Mexican Pottery, Stonex, and Marblex - but the students should have either the Mexican Pottery style (red) or the Stonex style (white). The reason being this brand and these two styles are both the easiest and most dependable to work with for the type of sculpting they will be doing. Using a different sort of clay will make a huge difference in the final outcome of the project. This clay may be purchased thru Michaels, Amazon or Blick’s. Please stick to this specific brand/type. This is vital to the class. Side-note: we will NOT be painting our sculptures in class. However, should your student plan to paint his/her sculpture later, Cindy recommends the Stonex style of clay. This will be much easier to “cover” in color. Here are some options.

2. clay sculpting tools. This inexpensive set would work well for this class.

3. A sturdy support of some sort (Cindy recommends: a 4- or 5- inch square piece of wood with a 3-inch +/- post x ¾ to 1 inch diameter standing in center). This will eventually be removable as the sculpture thoroughly dries over extended time, therefore, can be reusable.

4. If they would choose to simply use a protective cover sheet on the working surface, wax paper or freezer paper may certainly be used. However, Cindy would recommend something as a center support base be used (as inside the sculpture itself). This will be extremely important pertaining to the drying process, giving room for air later on. This also will assist in keeping the volume of clay used down to a proper/advantageous quantity.

5. Sizable cloth (cotton is best … old dishtowel, cloth diaper, etc), large enough to wrap around and cover the sculpture, dampened at the end of each lesson and kept damp in between.

6. Plastic bag to loosely cover sculpture between lessons until ready to allow to self-dry
