Join us and discover winter sowing. High school students will learn about seeds, planting, cold stratification, Monarch butterflies, bees, pollination, perennial vs annual plants and soil.

In this lesson, your student will create his/her own greenhouse out of an old milk jug and plant orange butterfly weed seeds – getting detailed instructions for how to maintain it over the winter and what to do in the spring when the plants begin to grow.

Our gardener prefers to grow the variety of milkweed known as orange butterfly weed/asclepias tuberosa because it is not invasive as other types of milkweed – spreading by seeds carried by the wind, not by underground tubers. This plant offers a beautiful orange flower and is a great food source for Monarchs, bees, and other butterflies. (see attached picture)

Note: Due to the fact that the instructor must purchase supplies before the lesson, NO refunds are possible. If you are sick the day of the event, please do not attend; instead, notify HAHA via the contact info above and we will arrange for the instructor to meet with you for a private lesson when you are well again.
