September 2: State Steam Locomotive: K4s
The K4s steam powered train was the premier passenger and hauling locomotive from 1914-1957. Discover the design, power and engineering and its selection as the official state steam locomotive.

September 9State Flagship: US Brig Niagara
The US Brig Niagara played one of the most vital roles in securing the Great Lakes. Learn the story of the Pennsylvania’s mission to build, man and sail this ship and its selection as the official state flagship.               

September 16: State Tree: Eastern Hemlock
Eastern hemlock trees have filled Pennsylvania forests for hundreds of years.  A slow-growing tree, this evergreen has been a major contributor to the state’s economy and a shelter for Pennsylvania songbirds.  Find out more about this conifer and its selection as the official state tree of Pennsylvania. 

September 23: State Electric Locomotive: GG1 4859
The GG1 electric train stationed out of Harrisburg moved passengers and freight from 1938-1979.  Explore how this innovation streamlined an industry and its selection as the official state electric locomotive.

September 30: State Beautification and Conservation Plant: Crownvetch
First discovered on a Pennsylvania farm in 1935, this multi-tasking legume now provides beauty along the roadside and support to the soil throughout the state. Find out more about the Crownvetch and its selection as the official state beautification and conservation plant of Pennsylvania.                                                                                                 

October 7: State Dog: Great Dane
The Great Dane breed was part of frontier Pennsylvania history as a hunting and working dog. Pennsylvania’s founder William Penn’s own Great Dane is featured with him in a portrait.
