Join us as we will meet a local celebrity from Mechanicsburg - racecar driver, Steve Wilbur! He will take us on a tour of Path Valley Speedway – a ¼ mile, clay dirt racetrack with high swooping turns and 10-degree banking built into the side of the Appalachian Mountains.

We will visit the pit, the garage, and the announcing/scoring booth. Mr. Wilbur will show us his racecar and even give us a chance to sit in it! We will learn how he got into racing – what his biggest thrills AND his biggest fears are. And he may even tell us about some of his crashes.

After the tour and interview, we will be allowed to watch the race! The heat races (qualifying races) will start at 6p. There will be a short intermission and then the real fun will begin with 5 rounds of actual racing.  Round 1: the “600cc Microsprints;” Round 2: the “700cc Microsprints” – Microsprints are just a little bigger than a go-cart; Round 3: Mr. Wilbur’s class, the “Wingless, Super Sportsman” driving at an average of 78 mph; Round 4: the 4-cylinder “Strictly Stock” – regular, front-wheel-drive, streetcars (like a Honda), and Round 5: the 4-cylinder “Thunder Cars” – rear-wheel drive, sports cars (like Mustangs).

TEENS ONLY are allowed to remain in the pit during the race – as long as the parents sign a waiver and the teens realize Mr. Wilbur will not be available for questions or discussion once the race begins. Teens are allowed to bring camp chairs to sit on in the pit. Note: The view is better in the stands than in the pit but the pit is an experience all its own. All other children MUST remain with their parents in the stands. (No one is allowed in the infield.)

If Mr. Wilbur wins his race, all HAHA students are invited to join him in the victory circle. So let’s root long and loud!

Mr. Wilbur is getting us into the Speedway (and the Pit) for free! So we are asking a small donation per family so we can show him our gratitude.

Notes:

We recommend earplugs/headphones for the noise and sunglasses/safety glasses for the dust.
For supper, there is a small concession stand at the Speedway or you may pack your own meal. Other options are Path Valley Restaurant (closes 8p) and Path Valley Market (closes 5p) which are nearby in town.
For those who enjoy camping, Cowan’s Gap Campground is about 25 mins from the Speedway.
Cell service is sketchy.
Because it IS a dirt track, if it rains the race will be canceled. Our rain date will be 2 weeks later, Oct 2nd.
You are not required to stay for the entire race; just remember, when traveling in this area, that this is “horse & buggy” country!
