Frequently Asked Questions

When is the registration deadline?

Registration Day for the 2023-24 school year will be held on July 22, 2023. OLG's registration deadline is August 1 each year. Comprehensive and School memberships are not offered after the annual registration deadline, but Associate memberships remain available throughout the year. Please contact us for more information.

How much does it cost to join OLG?

Membership is offered at the Comprehensive, School, and Associate levels. All costs are per year, per family.

Comprehensive Membership is $125: Provides church school services (filing of Church School Enrollment forms with local school board, keeping of attendance records, administration of standardized testing for a fee, and producing transcripts upon request for a fee), homeschool support services (including access to the OLG website), and participation in all Our Lady of Guadalupe school and social events.

School Membership is $100: Provides church school services (as above) and homeschool support services (including access to the OLG website). School and social event participation is excluded at this membership level.

Associate Membership is $75: Allows for participation in social events and homeschool support services (including access to the OLG website). Church school services are excluded at this membership level.

What kind of curriculum do I use? Do I purchase my books and materials from OLG?

OLG does not provide or approve curriculum. All enrolled members are solely responsible for the education of their student(s) and for selecting, purchasing, and obtaining all books and materials used within their homeschool.

What information do I have to provide in order to join OLG?

A complete membership application will include the Membership Application form, Church School Enrollment form(s), a copy of a birth or baptismal certificate for each student enrolled in OLG, and the membership fee.

Do you sponsor activities for students?

Yes! An important part of any education includes enrichment experiences. OLG members collaboratively create and organize many events, activities, and field trips throughout the year.

When does the school year begin?

The academic year begins July 1 and ends June 30. Families decide what form their academic schedule will take. There is no formal “start date.”

How many days per year am I required to teach my children?

OLG recommends that students receive between 140 and 180 days of instruction per year. The teaching parent determines which days are “school days.”

At what age am I required to enroll my child in school?

Alabama state law requires compulsory school attendance of children between the ages of six and 17.

Am I required to submit my student's grades to OLG?

All grades are to be kept by the teaching parent. Grades may be submitted to be kept on file with OLG, but are not required.

What are the annual reporting requirements? Am I required to submit curriculum plans or portfolios of work?

According to Alabama state law, the only academic document which cover schools are required to collect is an attendance record. An attendance record documenting between 140 and 180 days of instruction for each enrolled student must be received by June 30 of each year. The attendance record should be keyed to a lesson plan or work log, but only the attendance record is submitted to OLG. Attendance records are filed with a student's academic records. They are not submitted to local boards of education.

Does OLG provide academic transcripts?

Official transcripts can be produced by OLG for students who have been enrolled for at least nine weeks. A Transcript Request Form with all pertinent information and the appropriate fees must be submitted before a transcript will be created. The OLG transcript will ONLY contain grades received during enrollment with OLG. Records of grades from prior institutions are to be obtained from those institutions.

Do you have a private website for members?

Yes--approval for access to the OLG members' website is only granted after registration forms and fees have been received and approved.

Is OLG an accredited school?

No. As a “church school” operating according to Alabama law, we provide coverage to our member families—each of which is operating its own school at home. The freedom to educate our children according to individualized needs means that we do not offer a standardized curriculum or a prescribed method of education. Therefore, we cannot be evaluated according to the limited standards of accreditation agencies.

My family is non-Catholic. Can we join OLG?

Membership in Our Lady of Guadalupe is open to Catholic families only.

OLG is based in Mobile. Can I join if I live outside of the Mobile area?

Yes! Membership in OLG is available to Catholic families throughout the state of Alabama. Please contact us about registering.
