Jr. Literature/Five in a Row

Let's explore all kinds of topics of interest to 5 - 8 year olds, with a good grounding in social studies, language arts, art, math, and science! We will use material from the "Five in a Row" series for the classes, and use this model with other books. This involves reading a well-written children's picture book aloud for 2 weeks in a row of class, and intentionally expanding on different subject areas that come up naturally in the story. If you choose to read the book at home again, your child will teach YOU what they learned! You can also reinforce their learning with the summary of what we covered and handouts given each week.

As an example, when we read the story How to Make an Apple Pie and See the World, by Marjorie Priceman, we might use the story to learn about the different countries the character travels to in the book and play a geography memory game in the area of social studies; use the story to talk about the use of repetition and humor in writing/language arts; look at the medium used and the use of complementary colors for art; practice measuring dry and liquid ingredients for math; do an experiment to see what happens when salt water is left to evaporate and talk about healthy eating choices for science; and of course eat some homemade apple pie for fun! Foreign Language Classes

Latin 1

Latin is the foundation for study of the English language and is the perfect springboard to other languages. Students who know Latin perform higher on Standardized tests than any other category of student. Latin is useful for improving vocabulary, understanding English grammar, and enhancing ones ability to think in patterns and sequences.

The rigorous, grammar-based, high-school textbook, Jenney’s First Year Latin, students will learn all six major verb tenses in both the active and passive voices, all six noun cases (in the first and second declension), Parsing, and extended translation, following the story of the Fall of Troy. Students are expected to perform daily exercises totaling about two to three hours of work per week (This includes correcting your own assignments with a user-friendly answer book). Supplementing the curriculum will be additional study in Latin prefixes, suffixes, roots, and common expressions. Successful completion of class requirements is worth one semester of high school foreign language credit.

Participation in the National Latin Exam www.nle (Intro to Latin exam) will be required of all students. Cost is $6 per student and is part of the Material Fees. The exam will be administered on the second Monday of March at CHAMPs.

Instructor: Jim Hardman

Age: 6th grade and up (7th grade is the preferred minimum age for most)

Time: 9:30 – 10:25 am

Location: CHAMPs

Maximum: 15 students

Fee: $20/month per student, 1st and 2nd child

Third child taking Latin within the family is free, and parents are welcomed to sit in on the class.

Material Fees: $15, due in September, which includes the $6 registration for the National Latin Exam

Textbook Fee: For a used copy of Jenney’s First Year Latin (Prentice Hall, 1990 ed.), please contact the instructor for more information. Cost will be between $10 - $25, depending on condition of the given book. The same textbook is used for both Latin 1 and Latin 2 and can be shared among siblings. Purchase of a Latin-English dictionary is optional.

Elementary Beginning Spanish (Grades 3-6)

This class is designed to help children develop a love for Spanish. We will be using Discovering Languages: Spanish by Elaine S. Robbins and Kathryn R. Ashworth as the text, combined with Teach Them Spanish!

This second text allows for photocopies to be made to use in class, so weekly homework will be assigned from the copies of Teach Them Spanish! included in the 3-ring binder students will receive the first day of class, and pages from Discovering Languages. We will learn Spanish through songs, memorizing Bible verses, hands-on activities done all in Spanish, and cultural activities to learn about the peoples/countries where Spanish is spoken.

INSTRUCTOR: Arlene Hardman

AGE: Grades 3 – 6, or for those turning 8 during the school year, or permission of instructor.

TIME: 10:00-10:55

MAXIMUM: 15 students

CLASS FEE: $25/month per student + building fee (2 nd child in the class is $20 per month)

MAT’L FEE: $30 in August (includes cost of book, photocopies, and craft/food/culture materials)

Beginning Spanish for 5th – 8th grade

This class is designed to continue the foundation of Spanish laid in Beginning Spanish for Children (Grades 3-6) and prepare children for more serious language study. A workbook text is introduced (Basic Spanish), and because it is different material from previous Spanish classes, both beginners and students with previous exposure to Spanish can start this class and do well.

We will learn about 20 new vocabulary words in each weekly lesson, as well as digging into basic Spanish grammar. We will enjoy cultural activities, play games and do projects, all while strengthening conversational skills. There are 2 to 3 pages of homework each week (about 30-60 minutes a week). The vocabulary is also available on quizlet.com to practice as further reinforcement. This class is recommended as the best starting point for older elementary students or junior/senior high students who desire a less formal study of Spanish. This class is offered on alternating years.

INSTRUCTOR: Arlene Hardman

AGE: 5+

MIN / MAX: 4 students / 15 students

CLASS FEE: $25/month per student

MAT’L FEE: $30 Aug (includes cost of book, photocopies, and craft/food/culture materials)

The vocabulary is also available on quizlet.com to practice as further reinforcement. Knowing that many people are at different levels so I will adjust to the level needed for the students in the class. At our meet and greet in August, I will have a evaluation worksheet to determine your knowledge of Music Theory.
