Description:

This is a foundational course in thinking, writing, and speaking. The scope of the course is broad in an attempt to build a strong base for language communication.

Speech, poetry, study skills, grammar, literature, and composition will be the six pillars of the class, giving the students a secure platform for high school language arts requirements and beyond.

Both style and structure will be emphasized through IEW’s Modern History-Based Writing Lessons. This program will have a vocabulary component. No previous experience with IEW is required.

Specifics:

  • MLA documentation and parenthetical referencing will be introduced.
  • Seven works of historical fiction will be read at home and discussed in class. We will end the year with The Hobbit which is not historical fiction.
  • Study and organizational skills will be introduced and enforced throughout the year.
  • Specific public speaking skills will be implemented as students practice elocution by reciting memorized poetry.
