Description:

This literature and composition course is based upon IEW’s Advanced U.S. History-Based Writing Lessons used in conjunction with American Literature by Janice Campbell.

IEW teaches writing through both models of structure and elements of style, providing students with a well-stocked toolbox for a wide range of writing experiences in high school and college. Progressing from simple paragraphs and story summaries to well-organized five to ten-paragraph essays using MLA documentation, essay models taught in this course include argumentative, personal, narrative, descriptive, persuasive, research, and literary analysis.

American Literature teaches students basic concepts of reading and literary analysis, providing supplemental material to help students better understand and write about the text.

With Fix-It Grammar, students review rules of grammar of mechanics and apply them by analyzing short passages for grammar structure and correcting a handful of mechanical errors.

Students will use their commonplace books to collect quotes, build vocabulary, and take notes.

English 2 (or equivalent) is strongly recommended as a prerequisite for this course. While IEW can be introduced at any level, students without prior IEW experience learn several dress-ups and sentences openers each week in the early weeks of the course rather than learning them one by one over the course of a year.
