Algebra I

Description:

This course will cover signed numbers, exponents, solving equations, two equations with unknowns, graphing equations, scientific notation, ratio, percent, variation, unit conversions, geometry, perimeter, area, volume, English to metric conversion and surface area. This course will present math as a practical tool in the study of the world around us in addition to skills being rigorously practiced.
 

Prerequisite: Pre-algebra
 

Objectives: The goals of this class are two-fold. First, the student will be encouraged to develop the skills of self-learning. Second, the student will be prepared for upper-level high school math courses.
 

Expectations: Students will be expected to complete homework assignments on their own during the week. Class time will be devoted to emphasizing critical concepts, problem-solving examples, and opportunity for students to ask questions.
 

Zoom and Phone policies:  This class is considered an in-person class.  Students will be allowed to zoom up to 3 class periods/semester due to illness, travel, etc.  Advance notice that a student is requesting to zoom is recommended.  There will be no zoom or make-up options for missed in-class quizzes.  Phones are only allowed in class with teacher permission.
 

Grading and Academic Honesty:  Students will be graded primarily on tests and quizzes.  Quizzes will be taken in class and tests will be monitored by parents at home and delivered to the teacher for grading.  Late assignments without an excused absence will be docked 5%.  The parent is responsible for ensuring academic honesty.  Please make sure tests are proctored, answer keys are kept secure, and tests are delivered in a secure way.  (Tests may be mailed or sent in a sealed and signed envelope with student.) Grades will be communicated in a timely manner.  
 

Communication:  Parent-teacher communication will be available by email and text/phone.
