Geometry

Dates: Aug 12, 2025 – May 6, 2026—Tues
Period: 10:00 AM - 10:55 AM, 3rd Period 10:00 am - 10:55 am
Instructor: Mrs. Letitia Tyler

Description:
Geometry is a subject that, by its etymology, is all about measuring the earth - it's about figuring out how we can calculate and quantify various objects in 3-dimensional space, and observing how lines and shapes intersect. More than that (based on the axioms and methods put into writing by the classic/original Geometer Euclid over 2,000 years ago) this class is about logic and reasoning: how to make a sound deductive or inductive argument to prove something true based on more than just impressions or what seems to be the case. While there are forms and formulas to be memorized, this class is more geared towards training students to think critically and to think completely.

Some of the basic arithmetic and computation we will encounter requires a solid footing in algebra, especially the basics of solving equations, but at a certain point, linear equations as well.

Prerequisite:  Algebra 1

Textbooks and Materials:
  1. Jacobs, Harold R. Geometry - Seeing, Doing, Understanding, 3rd Edition. W.H. Freeman and Company, 2003
  2. Lined notebook, grid/graph paper if preferred.
  3. Calculator: something the student is familiar and comfortable with, but I would suggest a Texas Instruments TI-30XIIS.
  4. Ruler, protractor, and compass.

Cell Phone Policy: The general rule is to stay off of them. We’ll use them for calculators occasionally, or if you get a notification, you may take a look to make sure it’s not an emergency. Big idea: they should not be taking your attention away from the class.

Zoom Policy: I don’t use Zoom, but I do record videos of classes, and those will be uploaded/accessible to students, generally by the next afternoon. Questions that might have been asked during class can be sent by text or email to be addressed.
